The NBA Finals delivered more than just on-court drama Monday night. ESPN insider Shams Charania found himself in an unexpected off-court encounter when he was briefly stopped by the U.S. Secret Service outside Madison Square Garden.

The incident occurred before Game 3 of the 2026 NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs. With President Donald J. Trump and his granddaughter Kai Trump in attendance, security was significantly heightened around the arena. The Secret Service had scrapped a planned Knicks fan party outside MSG earlier in the day, setting the stage for a tense perimeter.

ESPN's Computer Model Picks Spurs to Bounce Back in Game 5 After Knicks' Epic Comeback
ESPN's computer model favors the Spurs to win Game 5 at home after the Knicks' 29-point comeback in Game 4. Can San Antonio bounce back?

Charania, who was reporting from the scene, explained on ESPN what happened. “I was actually stopped by Secret Service, just right over there, because my AirPod fell. Secret Service came up to me and said, hey, Secret Service, you’re going to have to get out of the intersection,” he said. The insider added that he was still searching for his lost AirPod case, joking, “We’re still on the hunt.”

The moment quickly went viral, with fans and media alike reacting to the unusual sight of one of basketball’s most connected reporters being detained—however briefly—by federal agents. It added a surreal layer to an already electric atmosphere inside the Garden.

On the court, the Spurs evened the series with a hard-fought win, taking Game 3 and cutting the Knicks' lead to 2-1. Victor Wembanyama delivered a standout performance, while Jalen Brunson and the Knicks struggled to contain San Antonio's length and energy.

President Trump, who attended the game, didn't hold back when asked about ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith's claim that Trump's presence had cost the Knicks the game. “I think he’s a nice guy, but you need a certain aptitude to run for president,” Trump told reporters. “You need a high IQ. I’m not sure that Stephen has that. I don’t think he does, actually.”

The political back-and-forth added another layer of intrigue to an already dramatic Finals. The series now shifts to Game 4, also at Madison Square Garden, where the Spurs will look to tie the series before heading back to San Antonio.

Charania’s brush with the Secret Service wasn’t the only off-court headline involving the insider this week. He recently faced criticism from Draymond Green for leaking the NBA MVP result, and was also defended by Jemele Hill after a public spat with Charles Barkley.

As the Finals continue, all eyes remain on the court—but for one night, it was the man with the scoops who became the story.
