The wedding bells are ringing, but so are calls for accountability. As Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift prepare to tie the knot this Friday at Madison Square Garden, a New York congresswoman is demanding the power couple foot the bill for the police presence required to keep their massive celebration safe.
Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-N.Y.) took to social media to voice her frustration, arguing that taxpayers shouldn't be on the hook for the security costs of a private event hosted by two multimillionaires. According to an internal NYPD memo obtained by the New York Times, the department is deploying hundreds of officers and closing streets in Midtown Manhattan for the two-day affair.
“Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce should reimburse NYPD for the 130 officers needed per day to keep their multi-million dollar, thousand person wedding at MSG safe,” Malliotakis wrote. “Our officers are already working overtime for 4th of July festivities & NYC taxpayers should NOT be on the hook.”
The wedding, which is expected to draw nearly 1,000 guests, will feature a who's who of celebrities, including Sabrina Carpenter, Selena Gomez, Gigi Hadid, Zoe Kravitz, Ed Sheeran, and Emma Stone. The guest list alone has turned the event into a media frenzy, with celebrity guests flooding NYC for the occasion.
Security measures are reportedly extreme. TMZ reports that each invitation is individually watermarked with the guest's name repeated throughout, allowing Kelce and Swift to trace any leak back to the source. The couple is also said to have shelled out around $3 million to rent Madison Square Garden for three days, making this one of the most expensive weddings in recent memory.
Malliotakis's demand echoes a broader debate about special protection for high-profile individuals and who should bear the cost. While the NYPD routinely handles large events, critics argue that private celebrations shouldn't drain public resources.
Kelce and Swift have not publicly responded to the request for reimbursement. The couple has kept many details under wraps, with sources saying that guests are being kept completely in the dark about the schedule until the last moment.
As the big day approaches, all eyes are on Manhattan. Whether the couple will open their wallets to cover the police overtime remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: this wedding is already making headlines for more than just the romance.
