The NFL grind is unforgiving, and for every roster spot, there are dozens of hopefuls fighting for a chance. But one Cincinnati Bengals rookie has decided to swap his cleats for a script, walking away from the game to pursue a role on the big screen.
Head coach Zac Taylor revealed Saturday that cornerback Ceyair Wright informed the team he was leaving to take an acting opportunity. Taylor, while clearly disappointed, gave Wright his full support, praising the young man's work ethic and potential.
“I don’t know how to properly define it for him,” Taylor told reporters. “He called us last night and let us know that he had an opportunity. I know it was a difficult decision for him. I think two things he’s really passionate about were colliding, and he decided to pursue this opportunity. So he’s a great kid, comes from a great university. And, you know, we wish him the best. He was fun to be around. He really competed hard for us. It was fun watching him play. I thought he was ascending as a player. But, obviously, he’s chosen to go a different path.”
Wright isn't just a football player dabbling in Hollywood — he's a seasoned actor with a notable résumé. In 2021, he starred as LeBron James' fictional son in Space Jam: A New Legacy, and his IMDB page lists several other TV and film credits. He's been acting since his teens, and now he's decided to give it a full-time shot.
His departure comes after a solid college career that saw him play at USC before transferring to Nebraska. With the Cornhuskers, Wright was a durable presence, appearing in all 26 games over two seasons and racking up 42 tackles, 11 passes defended, and two interceptions. Yet, despite that production, he wasn't invited to the NFL Scouting Combine and went undrafted before signing with Cincinnati in May.
Wright's decision to leave the team now, rather than ride out training camp, suggests he saw an opportunity he couldn't pass up. With the Bengals' training camp already dealing with injuries, his departure adds another twist to the team's preseason narrative.
While some might question walking away from an NFL dream, Wright's acting career has real momentum. The LeBron James connection from Space Jam could open doors, and his decision to leave football on his own terms is a bold move.
For the Bengals, it's a loss of a promising player, but as Taylor noted, Wright was competing hard and looking like he could make the roster. Instead, he's chosen a different path — one that might lead to a different kind of stardom.
We wish Ceyair Wright the best in his acting career. It's not every day you see a player walk away from the NFL to chase a role in Hollywood, but for this USC and Nebraska product, the call of the camera proved stronger than the call of the gridiron.
