The Lake Travis High School community is in mourning after confirming that 17-year-old senior Odin Hensley died from cardiac arrest. The talented athlete collapsed during football practice on Monday, Aug. 10, and despite the swift response of medical personnel, he could not be saved.
According to the school district, Hensley experienced a "serious health emergency" around 8 a.m. that morning, prompting an immediate call to Travis County STAR Flight, the region's air ambulance service. Head coach Carter canceled all remaining football activities for the day, saying, "Out of an abundance of caution, we canceled the remainder of today's football activities."
Coach Carter expressed deep gratitude for the quick actions of the athletic training staff, coaches, LTISD PD, and first responders who arrived on site within minutes. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the player and his family at this time," he added.
Days after being hospitalized, the school announced the tragic news: Hensley had died "as a result of the complications from a medical emergency he experienced during football practice earlier this week." The cause was later confirmed as cardiac arrest, a sudden and often unpredictable condition that has claimed the lives of other young athletes.
Superintendent Curtis Null shared heartfelt words about the teen, noting that Odin had been part of the Lake Travis ISD family for years, starting at Lake Pointe Elementary School. "At Lake Travis High School, he was a dedicated athlete who excelled in wrestling and football," Null said. "His teachers and coaches remember Odin as a kind, determined young man who was a valued teammate, classmate, and friend. His presence touched many lives, and he will be deeply missed."
The school district acknowledged the overwhelming support pouring in from the community. "We are grateful for the tremendous outpouring of support for Odin, his family and the Lake Travis football family over the past several days," read a news release. "During this difficult time, we ask that you keep Odin’s family, teammates and classmates, coaches, athletic trainers, teachers, and all those who knew and loved him in your thoughts and prayers."
This heartbreaking incident echoes the recent loss of another young athlete, as seen in the tragic case of Tyler Duckworth. It also brings to mind the untimely passing of a teen cheerleader in a fatal boat explosion, reminding us of the fragility of life.
As the Lake Travis community grapples with this loss, they are leaning on each other for strength. The football team, in particular, is facing an emotional season ahead, with the memory of their fallen teammate serving as both a source of sorrow and inspiration.
The school has not announced any memorial services yet, but plans are expected to be shared in the coming days. In the meantime, the focus remains on supporting Odin's family and friends during this unimaginably difficult time.
Our thoughts are with all who knew and loved Odin Hensley. May he rest in peace.
