New York Knicks owner James Dolan didn't hold back before Game 4 of the 2026 NBA Finals, unleashing a blistering critique of Mayor Zohran Mamdani over what he calls draconian security measures around Madison Square Garden. In a fiery radio appearance, Dolan accused the city of choking the life out of the Knicks' championship run by turning the streets into a 'police state.'

At the heart of the dispute is a permit for a public watch party outside the Garden. MSG claims the city's conditions—capping attendance at 1,000 ticketed spectators—are a sham. 'Mayor Mamdani’s “granting” of a watch party permit is disingenuous at best,' MSG said in a statement hours before tipoff. 'It came with multiple conditions, including not allowing more than 1,000 spectators and demanding that they all must have a ticket.'

Dolan went further on the radio with Craig Carton, questioning the experience of city leadership. 'I don’t think they have faith in their own police force. We do! We know they know what they’re doing. Honestly, the mayor’s office and the commissioner [Jessica Tisch] do not have the experience to do this. They’ve never managed anything like this before. It’s like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich coming out the sides,' he said.

The security clampdown mirrors the same heavy-handed measures used for Game 3, when President Trump attended. Businesses near MSG are bracing for lost revenue, and fans face long lines. Dolan insists the real issue isn't the watch party itself—it's about allowing Knicks fans to celebrate at 'the Mecca of basketball.'

'This is not really about a watch party. We put up two fairly decent sized screens. I don’t think you can get much more than 1,000 people that will see them. This about celebrating the Knicks at MSG at the mecca of basketball. This is what the mayor and commissioner’s office are trying to tell. They don’t want the celebration!' Dolan exclaimed.

The war of words comes amid an escalating feud between Dolan and Mamdani, with the owner accusing the mayor of freezing out fans. Dolan's criticism follows Stephen A. Smith's blast of Knicks fans after ugly incidents in Game 3, and Ben Stiller's plea for fans to show class.

Tipoff for Game 4 is set for 8:30 p.m. ET on ABC, with the Knicks looking to even the series against the Spurs. But off the court, the real battle may be between Dolan and City Hall.
