The Waynesburg University wrestling community is mourning the loss of Jessie Orbin Jr., a 20-year-old standout who died earlier this month from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. Orbin suffered a severe brain injury that his family was told was not survivable, and they said their final goodbyes on June 14.

Orbin wasn't just a force on the mat — he was a beloved figure in both the wrestling room and the harness racing community at The Meadows, where his father, Jessie Orbin Sr., has trained horses for years. Jessie worked as a groom for the Sarah Andrews Stable, and his bond with the horses, especially one named Fancy Like Lou, was legendary among those who knew him.

Lane Kiffin's National Title Promise Sparks Skepticism Among College Football Fans
Lane Kiffin promised to win a national title at LSU, but fans are skeptical, citing his lack of playoff wins and concerns about his leadership.

“Jessie was known for his kind and generous heart. He was the type of person who would give someone the shirt off his back without hesitation,” wrote Niki Presto on a GoFundMe page for the family. “He often put others before himself, including his siblings, whom he adored.”

One story that perfectly captures his character: he once went without buying himself a treat from Lovie's Ice Cream because he only had enough money to make sure his younger siblings could enjoy one. That selflessness defined his short but impactful life.

On the wrestling mat, Orbin was a powerhouse. He compiled a 107-25 record over his career and was named Waynesburg's Male Athlete of the Year twice. He also earned PAC Wrestler of the Week honors seven times and was named the PAC Tournament MVP during the 2025-26 season. His dedication and drive made him a role model for teammates and opponents alike.

Orbin's death adds to a heartbreaking pattern of young athletes lost too soon. Just last month, the sports world grieved Jordan Nasir, a 23-year-old wrestling prodigy who also died in a crash. And recently, Australian sprint star Jemma Stapleton, 25, died in a Thailand crash, sparking an outpouring of tributes.

The Orbin family has asked for privacy as they navigate this unimaginable loss, but they've also expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from the wrestling and harness racing communities. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help with funeral expenses and to support the family during this difficult time.

“Jessie was only 20 years old, but the impact he made on those around him was extraordinary,” Presto wrote. “His passion for the horses in his care was evident to everyone who knew him. In particular, his beloved Fancy Like Lou shared a special bond with him and will deeply miss the care and affection he gave every day.”

Our thoughts are with Orbin's friends, family, and all who were touched by his kindness and competitive spirit. His legacy as a fierce competitor and a gentle soul will not be forgotten.
