As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, USMNT captain Christian Pulisic is keeping his eyes on the pitch—not on the drama. In a recent interview with Time magazine, the AC Milan star finally addressed his very public split from social media influencer Alexa Melton, and he’s taking the high road.
“I only look at her in the most positive way,” Pulisic said. “She was a lot of fun, and she supported me in every way. She wanted to push me to enjoy my life a little bit more and do things with her and do things just in general. And I was grateful for that.”
The interview, conducted back in February, marks the first time Pulisic has spoken openly about the breakup—and he made it clear he’s not interested in rehashing the messy details. He declined to reveal the exact reason the relationship ended, but his tone was nothing but respectful.
That’s a stark contrast to how Melton initially handled the split. In April, she took to Instagram to make some eyebrow-raising comments that suggested Pulisic may have been using the exclusive dating app Raya while they were still together. When one user called the breakup a “generational fumble,” Melton replied, “How many likes to post his Raya profile?” In another comment, she wrote, “Mans was on Raya before it even ended.”
The accusations set social media ablaze, but Melton quickly backtracked. On April 9, she posted to her Instagram Story that she had “received false info” and apologized for implying Pulisic had cheated.
“I’ve made some comments on a private matter and it’s been taken out of context,” she wrote. “I received false info. He is not a cheater. Any narrative beyond that is not mine. Out of respect for Christian’s and my privacy, I will not speak further regarding this matter.”
The saga has drawn comparisons to other high-profile athlete breakups, like the recent Klay Thompson drama with Megan Thee Stallion, but Pulisic seems determined to avoid any further distractions.
For the USMNT star, the focus is squarely on the upcoming World Cup. The Americans will face Paraguay in Group D, and before that, they’ll play friendlies against Senegal and Germany later this month. Pulisic’s leadership will be crucial as the team looks to make a deep run on home soil.
While the breakup drama may have been a brief distraction, Pulisic’s measured response shows he’s mature enough to handle the spotlight—both on and off the field. And with the World Cup looming, that’s exactly the kind of composure the USMNT needs from its captain.
