The San Francisco 49ers are taking a cautious approach with Christian McCaffrey's latest health scare, and they've added some insurance in the backfield.
McCaffrey sat out practice earlier this week due to tightness, a development that raised eyebrows given his injury history. Head coach Kyle Shanahan, however, downplayed the concern, emphasizing that the team is more worried about McCaffrey pushing through discomfort and risking a worse injury.
"My concern would be him toughing through tightness, like a lot of people do, and then hurting something bad, and then pulling something, which then, it could be a month," Shanahan said. "That would be our concern, so once we hear him talking a certain way, Christian's a guy who needs to get prepared for Week 1. But also, we're pretty confident in what he's done before, we're confident in what he's done these two weeks, and we just want to make sure we don't make it something to be concerned about."
In response, the 49ers signed running back Zamir White, a former fourth-round pick of the Las Vegas Raiders. White brings a physical, between-the-tackles style that could complement the 49ers' offense if McCaffrey needs more rest.
White, 25, has rushed for 736 yards and two touchdowns on 198 career carries while also contributing 25 receptions for 152 yards. His experience in the league provides a reliable option behind McCaffrey and Elijah Mitchell.
The move underscores how critical McCaffrey's health is to San Francisco's Super Bowl aspirations. When he's at his best, as in 2023 when he piled up 1,459 rushing yards, 564 receiving yards, and 21 total touchdowns, the 49ers are a juggernaut. But his 2024 season was derailed by Achilles tendinitis and a PCL injury, limiting him to just four games as the team stumbled to a 6-11 record.
Last year, McCaffrey rebounded to play all 17 games, amassing 2,126 yards from scrimmage and helping the 49ers to a 12-5 mark and a playoff run. The contrast between those seasons illustrates just how much the offense revolves around his versatility.
Shanahan's cautious handling of this latest issue suggests the team is determined to avoid a repeat of 2024's disaster. By bringing in White, they've added a proven veteran who can shoulder the load if needed, while also giving McCaffrey the freedom to heal properly.
The 49ers' injury list has been a growing concern, with multiple players sidelined at practice. Adding White is a step toward stabilizing the backfield, but the spotlight remains on McCaffrey's readiness for Week 1.
If McCaffrey is healthy, San Francisco should be a playoff contender. If not, the season could quickly unravel. For now, the 49ers are doing what they can to ensure their star stays on the field.
