The Indiana Fever are making it clear: Stephanie White isn't going anywhere. Amid a storm of criticism over her recent comments, the team's president has stepped in to shut down any speculation about a coaching change.
Over the weekend, the Fever faced the Chicago Sky in a heated matchup that saw DiJonai Carrington ejected after a hard foul on Sophie Cunningham. The play, which involved contact to the head and neck area, sparked immediate debate. White, however, defended Carrington's intent while acknowledging the severity of the foul.
“Yeah, I mean, look, it was a hard foul. I don’t think that DiJonai intentionally came out to get her across the neck like she did. But it did happen and I thought it was the right call,” White told reporters. “She’s going to compete, no one’s going to walk in for an easy layup, so I don’t oppose the hard foul.”
Those comments didn't sit well with some high-profile figures. Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy and former ESPN anchor Linda Cohn both took shots at White, with Cohn going as far as calling for her dismissal. “There is no coach in any sport on planet earth where Stephanie White would still be employed for supporting opposing players more than she supports her own, specifically Sophie Cunningham and Caitlin Clark,” Cohn said. “I know her history and I know what a great player she used to be, but it’s not working with the Indiana Fever. The reason she’s not fired already is because the owners don’t care or because the Fever are doing well. But they are [contending] not because of Stephanie White, but because of Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell.”
But the Fever's front office isn't budging. Prior to Tuesday's game against the New York Liberty, Fever president Kelly Krauskopf released a statement expressing unwavering support for White. “Coach White has done a tremendous job leading the Fever and for the second-consecutive season, has us in great position for a playoff push,” Krauskopf said. “She has kept our team focused and united, all while under the brightest spotlight our team and our league have ever experienced. She has the full support of leadership.”
This public backing comes as the Fever sit comfortably in playoff contention with a 20-12 record. The team's success, driven by stars like Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell, has made it hard to justify any drastic changes. As White's previous run-ins with officials show, she's not afraid to stand up for her players, and the front office seems to appreciate that fire.
The criticism from Cohn and Portnoy has been intense, but it's not the first time White has faced scrutiny. Earlier this season, Carrington's own controversial comments after the ejection added fuel to the fire. Yet, the Fever's leadership remains resolute, focusing on the team's on-court performance rather than outside noise.
With the playoffs approaching, Indiana is in a strong position. The team's chemistry and focus, as Krauskopf highlighted, have been key to their success. While some may question White's tactics or loyalty, the numbers don't lie. The Fever are winning, and the front office sees no reason to rock the boat.
As the season winds down, all eyes will be on how White and her squad handle the pressure. But for now, the message from the top is clear: Stephanie White is the coach, and she has the full backing of the franchise. Any talk of a mid-season shakeup is just that—talk.
