Authorities in the United Kingdom are urging the public to steer clear of a popular beach after three young women were discovered dead in the water near a Brighton beach club early Wednesday morning.
The victims, believed to be in their late teens or early 20s, were found fully clothed in what officials are calling a tragic and fast-moving situation. Emergency services pulled them from choppy waters around 5:45 a.m. local time, according to reports.
“This is a tragic incident and fast-moving enquiries are ongoing to confirm the identities of three women and understand exactly what has happened,” said Sussex Police Chief Superintendent Adam Hays. “I know this is concerning for the community, but I would ask the public to stay away from the scene at this time while emergency services continue their work.”
The beach club had been packed the night before, and witnesses reported seeing personal belongings like handbags and coats near where the women were found. A club worker told local media that police were on site early, searching for additional items such as phones.
Rough water conditions and strong winds have been cited as potential factors, with one local describing the sea as “extremely windy, cold and choppy.” The same source noted that the conditions could have easily pushed someone toward the Brighton Palace Pier.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities have closed the beach to the public. The identities of the three women have not yet been confirmed, and officials are working to notify next of kin.
This tragedy echoes the recent incident at Brighton that shocked the community, though details remain scarce. Meanwhile, the sports world has seen its own share of somber moments, including Arizona State hoops star Marley Washenitz's beach photo after graduation, which offered a lighter contrast.
Our thoughts are with the friends and family of the victims during this difficult time.
