For two decades, LeBron James has dominated the NBA, piling up four championships, countless All-Star nods, and a résumé that most analysts place firmly in the top two all-time, right behind Michael Jordan. But not everyone is convinced. A growing chorus of former NBA greats—including Tim Hardaway Sr.—are publicly snubbing LeBron from their personal top five lists, and the reason cuts to the heart of what they believe defines greatness.
Hardaway Sr. Explains His Top Five—Without LeBron
Appearing on FanDuel’s “Run It Back Show,” Hardaway Sr. was clear about his criteria. “You got Michael, I still say Kobe, I still say Magic, you know, and I still say Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and then you go from there,” he said. “You got Hakeem Olajuwon, you got Shaquille O’Neal.”
Hardaway wasn’t dismissive of LeBron’s accomplishments—far from it. He praised the 41-year-old’s remarkable longevity and ability to still “fly around the court.” But when it comes to the all-time pantheon, he and others prioritize something else: a relentless, game-changing tenacity.
“I think these guys go by championships, and they go by the killer tenacity that these guys had. Like Magic, Michael, Kareem, Kobe—they had killer instinct,” Hardaway said. “They came out and they didn’t let their team wielder them, they gave their team confidence.”
That intangible—the cold-blooded, take-over-a-game mentality—is what Hardaway and many former players feel LeBron sometimes lacks. “At times he doesn’t bring it the way we want him to bring it,” Hardaway added, comparing the expectation to how fans want to see James Harden at his best.
A Pattern of Snubs
Hardaway isn’t alone. Other NBA legends have also left LeBron off their top five lists, echoing similar themes. The conversation has been reignited by recent media debates, including Skip Bayley's controversial ranking that placed eight legends ahead of LeBron, and Shannon Sharpe's impassioned defense of LeBron's legacy.
LeBron’s supporters point to his unmatched versatility, leadership, and the sheer weight of his statistical achievements. But for the old-school set, rings and ruthlessness still rule the conversation.
What’s Next for LeBron?
With the 2026-27 season looming, LeBron has yet to announce whether he’ll return. The Lakers face an uncertain future, and speculation about his next move is already swirling. Four teams have emerged as potential landing spots for 2027, and the window for another title may be closing.
Whether or not he ever cracks the top five of every legend’s list, LeBron’s place in NBA history is secure. But the snubs from his peers reveal a fascinating divide between stats and soul—and for now, the old guard isn’t budging.
