Illinois head coach Bret Bielema isn't letting go of a grudge against Georgia. In a pointed social media exchange, the Fighting Illini boss appeared to accuse the Bulldogs of tampering, reigniting a feud that started when running back Josh McCray bolted for Athens last year.

The drama unfolded after a video surfaced of Jeremiyah Love's father discussing the Notre Dame star's decision to turn down massive NIL offers to stay with the Fighting Irish. While the father didn't name any school, a social media user baselessly claimed Georgia had tampered with Love, offering him a seven-figure deal to transfer. Bielema replied with a short but cutting comment: "Wish they had succeeded. Because they came and got ours."

That "ours" is McCray, who spent four seasons with Illinois before entering the transfer portal and quickly landing at Georgia. Bielema didn't stop at a social media jab. During an appearance on The Triple Option podcast last June, he hinted strongly at tampering. "We did lose a guy to Georgia," Bielema said. "Somehow, he found his way to the portal, and 12 hours after being in the portal, he was on a flight to Georgia. I don't know how that happened, but it's crazy."

McCray's move hasn't exactly paid off for the Bulldogs. He managed just 140 yards and three touchdowns on 56 touches in a limited role, while sophomore Nate Frazier took over as Georgia's lead back with over 1,000 yards. Meanwhile, Illinois' committee of Ca'Lil Valentine, Kaden Feagin, and Aidan Laughery combined for 1,503 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns in 2025, helping the Illini to a nine-win season.

Bielema's latest shot comes as the college football world buzzes about NIL and tampering. The Love situation is a reminder of how quickly rumors spread. Love's father said the big offers came before his son even joined Notre Dame in 2023, not as a transfer pitch. Love went on to finish third in the 2025 Heisman voting with 1,652 scrimmage yards and 21 touchdowns before being selected No. 3 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals.

Tampering accusations are nothing new in college football, especially with the transfer portal and NIL creating a Wild West environment. The Brendan Sorsby betting controversy earlier this year highlighted how quickly things can spiral when rules are bent. Bielema clearly feels Georgia crossed a line with McCray, and he's not shy about saying so.

Georgia, for its part, hasn't responded to Bielema's latest comments. The Bulldogs are coming off a strong 2025 season, led by Frazier's breakout performance. But the shadow of tampering allegations lingers, especially with high-profile transfers like McCray and the Love rumors.

Bielema's frustration might also stem from Illinois' own success. The Illini proved they could win without McCray, but the sting of losing a key player to a powerhouse like Georgia still stings. As the transfer portal continues to reshape rosters, expect more coaches to voice similar frustrations. For now, Bielema's "wish they had succeeded" tweet is the latest salvo in a simmering rivalry that shows no signs of cooling down.
