The Brandon Aiyuk saga in San Francisco is about to take another dramatic turn. After a turbulent year that saw his contract guarantees voided and a stint on the reserve/left squad list, the star wide receiver is officially seeking a return to the field. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Aiyuk has submitted the paperwork for reinstatement, and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, confirms he's healthy and ready to play.
"Brandon is healthy and ready to get back on the field," Rosenhaus told Schefter. That's a far cry from the situation last October when Aiyuk tore his ACL, a setback that ultimately led the 49ers to void $27 million in guaranteed money from his four-year, $120 million deal. The fallout was messy, with Aiyuk going on a social media rant, accusing the team of being "stupid" and "dumb" for paying him $50 million in eight months only to strip his 2027 guarantees.
Now, the 49ers have made it clear they're done with the former All-Pro. They placed him on the left squad list for 2026, and head coach Kyle Shanahan has already told reporters he's not interested in a reunion. So once Aiyuk reports to the facility, San Francisco will have to cut him, trade him, or play him. Given Shanahan's stance, a trade seems inevitable.
So where could Aiyuk land? Here are three teams that make the most sense, starting with the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs have been hunting for wide receiver help all season, and Aiyuk's ability to stretch the field and create after the catch would give Patrick Mahomes another dynamic weapon. Kansas City's offense has lacked a true No. 1 receiver since trading Tyreek Hill, and Aiyuk could be that missing piece.
Next up, the Los Angeles Rams. They're already dealing with a crowded receiver room and the looming return of Davante Adams, but if they're willing to take on another big personality, Aiyuk could be a temporary fix. The Rams have shown they're not afraid to make bold moves, and Aiyuk's route-running precision would fit well in Sean McVay's scheme. It's a gamble, but one that could pay off handsomely in a division that's wide open.
Finally, the Washington Commanders. This is the most intriguing option because of the connection to quarterback Jayden Daniels. The two were teammates at Arizona State, and Schefter noted that Washington was linked to Aiyuk during the 2026 offseason. "I think they will be holding onto him to see if there's any trade value at all. Washington does make a lot of sense," Schefter said. "He played with Jayden Daniels in college. They're very close. I'm sure Jayden would love to play again with Brandon Aiyuk."
But Schefter also cautioned that the 49ers aren't in a rush to move him, even though everyone knows it's coming. That could mean a bidding war, which would be great news for a 49ers team looking to recoup some value. For Aiyuk, a fresh start with a quarterback he trusts could be exactly what he needs to reignite his career.
Of course, there are other teams in the mix. The Jonathan Taylor trade talks show how quickly rosters can shift in this league, and a similar move for Aiyuk wouldn't surprise anyone. The NFL is always full of surprises, and this one could have major implications for the playoff race.
As Aiyuk prepares to step back onto the field, the question is: which uniform will he be wearing? The Chiefs, Rams, and Commanders all present compelling cases, but only one team can land him. Fans will be watching closely to see how this drama unfolds.
