Halloween is supposed to be all fun and games, but for Erin Andrews, it turned into a moment of self-consciousness. The 48-year-old NFL sideline reporter dressed up as Wendy from Peter Pan, while her son Mack went as Captain Hook. The family clearly got into the spirit, but Andrews couldn't shake the feeling that she didn't quite pull it off.
On her Calm Down podcast with co-host Charissa Thompson, Andrews joked that she looked like an "old hag" while trick-or-treating through her California neighborhood. The awkwardness peaked when she crossed paths with some of the "hot moms" she knows from workout classes—women who are about 15 years younger and looking fabulous in their Halloween gear.
"I'm walking around, I look like an old hag, it was perfect for me," Andrews said. "I see these gals and they're hot and they're younger. They've got me by what, 15 years maybe? And they're like, 'oh my god, Wendy! You look so cute.' And these gals are in their unitards, short skirts. And they look great. And I'm like, 'I'm Wendy… hey guys!'", she added with a laugh, punctuating the story with a "Womp, womp."
Of course, Andrews is being way too hard on herself. She looked adorable as Wendy, and there's no shame in getting into the Halloween spirit at any age. But her story resonates with anyone who's ever felt a little out of place among a younger, trendier crowd. It's a reminder that even successful, confident women like Andrews have moments of insecurity.
Beyond the Halloween hijinks, Andrews also shared a more serious moment from her work. She recently covered the Lions game for FOX, where she had to report on the injury to linebacker Jack Campbell. It was a tough assignment, especially since she knows Campbell's family personally.
"It's just tough because I go to his family, his wife, his kid," Andrews said on her podcast. "Like I said, I've jumped in an ambulance before. It's the (expletive) part of the game. It's the real part of the game." She also felt the weight of asking for updates, saying, "That's also the hard part of what we do is having to report on it. You don't want to misspeak. You just want to handle it with as much grace and let the trainers do their gigs. I felt bad even asking PR, like, 'Do you have an update?'"
Fortunately, Campbell is on the mend. In a statement released Wednesday, he expressed gratitude for the support and optimism about his recovery. "My family and I want to sincerely thank everyone for the overwhelming amount of love, prayers, and support we've received over the past few days. It means more to us than words can express," he said. "I'm incredibly encouraged by the progress I've made in such a short period of time. I have full movement in my lower body, and I'm continuing to make progress with movement in my upper body. I know there's still work ahead, but I remain very optimistic. I'm taking things one day at a time, staying positive, and focusing on getting better."
While Andrews may have felt like the odd one out on Halloween, she's a pro at handling the tough parts of her job with grace. And her fans are certainly loving her recent swimsuit photos that have been making waves. But for now, she's just happy to be part of the Halloween fun, even if she felt a little outshined by the younger crowd.
