The Buffalo Bills made a surprising roster move on Tuesday, releasing veteran safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson just days after his one-game suspension for unsportsmanlike conduct came to an end. The decision comes as the team looks to shore up its secondary, but it appears the front office felt the veteran's on-field contributions weren't meeting expectations.
Gardner-Johnson, 28, who has bounced around the league with stops in New Orleans, Philadelphia, Detroit, Houston, Baltimore, and Chicago, brought a Super Bowl ring and a reputation for playing with an edge. But that same fiery demeanor has often worn thin, and his latest incident proved to be a tipping point for some. In Week 6, he was ejected and subsequently suspended by the NFL after spitting in the direction of Las Vegas Raiders tight end Brock Bowers.
According to Matt Parrino of Syracuse.com, the release was based purely on football reasons, not the spitting incident. “This was a football decision, I’ve learned,” Parrino said. “Gardner-Johnson was inconsistent on the field and he doesn’t play special teams. Other players stepped up & the Bills couldn’t find a spot for CJGJ back on the roster.”
The Bills have depth at safety with Damar Hamlin and Geno Stone already on the roster, but some observers believe the move could signal a bigger plan. The NFL trade deadline is Nov. 10, giving general manager Brandon Beane about a week to explore potential additions. “C.J. Gardner-Johnson released. Safety was already a need. Have to wonder if there’s an addition coming,” said Matthew Bove of WKBW.
Fans on social media have been buzzing with speculation. “If Beane just released a safety without having a trade deal already finalized for another one I would be shocked. (he can’t possibly be THAT bad at his job right),” one fan wrote. Another declared, “Addition by subtraction.” A third added, “Hopefully they announce the safety they just traded for tomorrow, or the next day. He will be too new to play against the Vikings, but he should be able to get on the field in about 2 weeks.”
Gardner-Johnson’s tenure in Buffalo was short-lived, and his release adds another chapter to a career marked by both playmaking and controversy. The Bills will now look to solidify their secondary as they push toward the postseason, and the upcoming trade deadline could provide the answer. For now, the team appears content to rely on their current options, but the rumor mill is churning.
This isn’t the first time Gardner-Johnson has found himself in hot water. Earlier this season, a 49ers star accused him of spitting during a game, adding to his reputation as a player who walks the line between aggressive and reckless. His nightmare season hit a new low with the spitting ejection, and the Bills ultimately decided they had seen enough.
As the Bills move forward, they’ll likely keep an eye on the waiver wire and trade market. With the deadline approaching, the team’s Thanksgiving showdown with the Chiefs could feature some new faces in the secondary. For now, Buffalo’s safety room belongs to Hamlin and Stone, and the organization is hoping they can provide the stability Gardner-Johnson couldn’t.
