The wrestling community is grieving the loss of Joe Doering, a powerhouse who carved out a legendary career across two decades and multiple continents. He passed away on Friday at the age of 44, surrounded by family after a courageous fight against a brain tumor.
MAPLE LEAF PRO Wrestling, where Doering had been working in recent years, broke the news with a heartfelt statement. "At 9:13 a.m. today, June 26, our brother Joe Doering passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family. Though his time on this earth lasted only 44 years, Joe packed a thousand years’ worth of living into every one of them," the promotion wrote. They added that Doering is survived by his wife, Lindsay, and countless fans worldwide who will remember his strength and spirit.
Doering had been battling a brain tumor since November and entered hospice care earlier this week. His first bout with a brain tumor came in 2016, but he returned to the ring after surgery. The tumor returned in 2022, and the subsequent surgery left him with ataxia, effectively ending his in-ring career.
Born in Chicago, Doering began his professional wrestling journey in his early 20s. He found his greatest success in All Japan Pro Wrestling (AJPW), where he became a two-time Triple Crown Heavyweight Champion. His 315-day reign as champion ranks 14th in the promotion's history. He also had a brief stint in WWE's developmental system in 2010 and several runs in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (later Impact Wrestling).
Tributes have poured in from across the wrestling world. One fan wrote, "Joe Doering was one of the first 'imports' I wanted to bring to the UK & in 2019, I did. A mountain of a man with a kind heart, exceptional and believable in the ring." Another added, "Deepest condolences to the Doering family. Joe was a true warrior in the ring and a true gentleman off the ring in Japan. Thank you for the unforgettable fights in All Japan Pro Wrestling." A third fan reflected, "A great inspiration with my battle with cancer. But a great man and wrestler too. The world lost a warrior!"
Doering's passing comes just weeks after the tragic death of Waynesburg wrestler Jessie Orbin, another young life lost far too soon. The wrestling community continues to grapple with these losses, but Doering's legacy as a fighter—both in the ring and in life—will not be forgotten.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all those who were touched by his remarkable journey.
