The United States men's national team didn't waste any time making a statement at this World Cup. After just two matches, they've already clinched the top spot in Group D, booking their ticket to the knockout rounds with authority.
Following a commanding 4-1 victory over Paraguay, the USMNT came out firing against Australia on Friday, jumping to a 2-0 lead before halftime. Though the second half saw some sloppy play, Mauricio Pochettino's squad held on for another three points, leaving no doubt about their place in the next stage.
“You know, [if] someone said before the tournament two games and you’re through to the knockouts, I think we all would have took it,” said striker Folarin Balogun. “We’re delighted.”
Next up is a final group stage clash with Türkiye on June 25, but fans are already looking ahead. The Round of 32 showdown is scheduled for July 1 in Santa Clara, California, and will air on FOX — which has seen ratings skyrocket 128% during this tournament.
As things stand, the USMNT is projected to face Bosnia and Herzegovina in that opener. If they advance, the Round of 16 match would take place on July 6 in Seattle, Washington. The quarterfinals are set for July 10 in Inglewood, California.
Of course, there's still plenty of soccer to be played, and the team isn't getting ahead of itself. But after such a dominant start, it's hard not to dream. The squad has given its fan base something real to believe in — and a path that could lead all the way to the final.
Stay tuned for updates as the knockout bracket takes shape.
