Daytona International Speedway has unveiled its 2027 NASCAR calendar, and while the news brings a beloved preseason event back to the track, it also confirms that the July 4th weekend race fans have long dreamed of isn't happening. The announcement, made via FOX NASCAR insider Bob Pockrass, sets the stage for another year of high-octane action at the iconic Florida venue.
The headline is the return of the Clash, the preseason exhibition race that hasn't been held at Daytona since 2021. It's scheduled for Saturday night, February 13, 2027, kicking off a week of festivities that culminates with the Daytona 500 on Sunday, February 21. The summer slate sees the Coke Zero Sugar 400 set for August 28, with support races for other NASCAR circuits filling out the weekend of August 27-28.
While the Clash's homecoming has many fans buzzing, the absence of a Fourth of July race continues to sting. Daytona hosted a NASCAR race on or near Independence Day nearly every year from 1959 to 2019, but that tradition ended in 2020 when the series shifted to Road America, then Atlanta Motor Speedway. The date hasn't returned to Daytona since, and 2027 will mark the eighth consecutive year without it.
Pockrass's announcement on X (formerly Twitter) was blunt: “In addition to announcing the Clash as Saturday night Feb. 13, Daytona also announces its 2027 summer date as August 27-28 (so for those wanting to go back to Daytona for July 4 weekend, that’s not happening in 2027).” The post drew a flurry of reactions, with some fans venting frustration and others simply relieved to see the Clash back at its spiritual home.
“If they can’t do Daytona, why can’t 4th of July weekend be at like Atlanta?” one user asked, while another mused, “San Diego maybe on July 4th?” A third fan declared, “Clash needs to stay at Daytona for eternity. No Los Angeles, no Bowman Gray, stays right here.”
The Clash's return is a significant win for traditionalists. The race was held at Daytona from 1979 to 2021, then moved to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for two years and Bowman Gray Stadium in 2025. Its comeback to the high banks adds a nostalgic touch to Speedweeks, which also features the Daytona 500, the season's biggest event. The 2027 Daytona 500 will also mark the final Cup Series start for Jimmie Johnson, who has announced his retirement.
Beyond the Clash and the 500, the schedule includes the usual support races, but the summer date remains a sore point for many in the NASCAR community. The lack of a July 4th race has been a recurring complaint, especially as other tracks like Atlanta have filled the void. Some fans have even suggested that the holiday weekend should feature a different venue, but so far, NASCAR has kept its calendar as is.
For now, Daytona fans can mark their calendars for February and August, but the dream of celebrating America's birthday at the World Center of Racing remains just that—a dream. As one fan put it, “Perhaps one day it will return.” Until then, the Clash's return is a welcome consolation prize.
