Diego Sanchez, a former UFC standout, found himself in handcuffs once again. According to KOB4, the veteran fighter was arrested Monday in New Mexico on charges of aggravated DUI and violating his probation. The arrest stems from an incident that authorities say involved alcohol, a substance he was expressly ordered to avoid.
Sanchez's legal troubles began earlier this year when he pleaded guilty to a felony gun charge after firing a weapon into the air from his car on a freeway in Albuquerque. As part of his sentencing, a judge handed down five years of supervised probation, with a strict condition: no alcohol. But according to TMZ, Sanchez's blood alcohol level at the time of Monday's arrest was more than double the legal limit, a clear breach of that condition.
Prosecutors had pushed for jail time in the earlier case, highlighting the recklessness of his actions. "The defendant has shown reckless actions when he shot the firearm out of the car window," state prosecutor Genia Gonzales said in March. His defense attorney, however, argued that Sanchez was committed to sobriety and seeking treatment for substance abuse.
In his own words from that hearing, Sanchez expressed remorse and a desire to change. "All I can do is take accountability, own it, and spread positivity to the youth and the next generation to change these ways," he said. "Not to be shooting out windows like cowboys."
Sanchez's MMA career is storied, beginning with 18 consecutive wins after his debut in 2002. He rose to fame on the first season of The Ultimate Fighter, defeating Kenny Florian via first-round TKO to win the middleweight tournament. His first title shot came after a memorable victory over Clay Guida in The Ultimate Fighter 9 finale, a bout that earned Fight of the Year honors in 2009. However, his title challenge against BJ Penn ended in a loss, marking the start of a downturn in his career.
The UFC released Sanchez in 2021 after pulling him from a fight against Donald Cerrone. UFC president Dana White expressed concerns about Sanchez's trainer, Joshua Fabia, who had been seen chasing fighters with a knife in the ring.
As of now, Socorro County Jail records indicate no bond has been set for Sanchez. This latest arrest adds another chapter to a troubled period for the former fan favorite, raising questions about his future both inside and outside the octagon.
