A vibrant young life was cut short this week in a heartbreaking accident that has left a Massachusetts community reeling. A 12-year-old girl died after a school bus collided with a motorized scooter she was riding with another child in Haverhill.

According to the Essex County District Attorney's Office, the crash occurred Thursday around 4 p.m. at the intersection of Portland Street and 5th Avenue. Emergency crews rushed both children to nearby hospitals, but despite their efforts, one of the victims succumbed to her injuries.

“Pending family notifications, her identity will not be released by this office at this time,” officials said in a statement, confirming the girl was a Haverhill public schools student. The second child has since been released from the hospital.

Witness Nic Mello described the harrowing scene to local media. “It looked like they tried to hit their brakes to try to stop and like speed wobble, and they smashed right into it,” he told WCVB. “I saw them fall to the ground, the scooter got smashed. At first, I didn’t really believe it, but then I heard the girl screaming, so I started to run to her.”

The crash is under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Haverhill Police. No charges have been filed at this time.

This tragic event echoes other recent losses in the sports world, reminding us how fragile life can be. Just last month, a Waynesburg wrestler died in a motorcycle crash, and earlier this year, an Australian sprint star lost her life in a Thailand crash. The sports community has also mourned a 23-year-old wrestling prodigy killed in a crash.

School bus safety remains a critical concern nationwide. While the bus driver in this incident has not been identified, authorities are reviewing all factors, including vehicle condition, road conditions, and driver behavior.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends, and classmates of the young victim. The Haverhill community is rallying together, with counselors available at local schools to support grieving students.

As the investigation continues, officials urge anyone with information or video footage to contact Haverhill Police. The district attorney's office has pledged a thorough and transparent probe.
