It is a solemn weekend for the U.S. military and the nation as a whole. Two American service members lost their lives in Jordan over the weekend, following a series of ballistic missile and drone attacks. The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the tragic news on Saturday, revealing that the attacks occurred as U.S. and partner forces were defending the area.
The attacks, which CENTCOM attributed to Iranian forces, also left one service member unaccounted for. Four additional American personnel were medically evacuated to hospitals in Jordan. Fortunately, all four have since been discharged. Other troops who sustained minor injuries have already returned to duty.
“On July 17, two U.S. service members in Jordan were killed in action as U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and partner forces defended against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks. Additionally, one service member is currently missing. Four American service members were medically evacuated to Jordanian hospitals. They have since been discharged. Other personnel who were evaluated for minor injuries have returned to duty,” CENTCOM said in a statement. Out of respect for the families, the command will not release further details, including the identities of the fallen, until 24 hours after next of kin have been notified.
This latest tragedy adds to a growing toll. According to The New York Times, 16 American service members have died since the U.S. and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28. Earlier this year, on March 1, six U.S. service members were killed in a direct Iranian strike. Then, on March 12, another six died when an Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker crashed in western Iraq. The cumulative losses underscore the escalating tensions in the region.
President Donald Trump has not yet issued a statement regarding the latest deaths. However, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth did respond, saying, “Their sacrifice only stiffens our resolve.” Vice President JD Vance also spoke at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, on March 26, though his remarks did not directly address this incident.
The attacks come amid a fragile geopolitical landscape. A ceasefire between Iran and the United States had been in place, but talks broke down this week, raising fears of further violence. The region remains volatile, with no clear end in sight to the cycle of retaliation.
This is not the first time the sports world has paused to honor military sacrifice. In a similar vein, the recent tragedy involving Sacramento State football star Ivan Garza reminds us of the human cost of conflict and loss. Our thoughts are with the families of all those affected by this weekend’s events.
As the nation mourns, the military community continues to stand strong. The four service members who were evacuated and later discharged are a testament to the resilience of our armed forces. But the missing service member remains a focus of urgent search efforts. CENTCOM has not provided updates on the search, but the priority is clear: bring everyone home.
In the coming days, more details may emerge as investigations proceed. For now, the focus is on supporting the families of the fallen and the missing. The sports community, like the rest of the nation, stands with them.
