The Sacramento State community is reeling this week after the sudden and heartbreaking loss of former football standout Ivan Garza. The 25-year-old, who earned All-Big Sky honors just last season, died after being hit by a vehicle in Delano, California.

According to the Delano Police Department, officers responded to a call early Wednesday morning about a pedestrian fatally struck on the road. Preliminary reports indicate that a northbound driver hit Garza as he was crossing the street. The incident remains under investigation.

Former Michigan Aide Sues University Over Withheld Records in Moore Scandal
Paige Shriver, the former executive assistant at the center of the Sherrone Moore scandal, is suing the University of Michigan for allegedly withholding records related to the investigation.

Garza was a force on the offensive line for the Hornets, starting 10 games at left tackle and three at right tackle during the 2023 campaign. His size and skill made him a standout in the Big Sky Conference, but those who knew him say his impact off the field was even greater.

“He was a big guy with such a big heart,” his aunt, Sonia Garza, told local station KBAK. “Nobody knows such a big guy with such a big heart. He was a great mentor to everybody. Everybody automatically looked up to him. And then when they saw that he was good, they looked up to him even more.”

The Garza family is now facing both emotional and financial challenges. A GoFundMe campaign launched to help cover funeral expenses has already raised over $27,000. “No family is ever prepared for a loss like this,” the fundraiser reads. “Every donation, no matter the amount, will go directly toward funeral expenses and helping the family through this incredibly difficult time.”

Garza’s journey began at Robert F. Kennedy High School before he took his talents to Sacramento State. His loss adds to a somber year for college football, echoing the recent death of Rutgers former captain Jamil Merrell at 36.

As the Hornets family mourns, the sports world is reminded of the fragility of life and the importance of community support. The GoFundMe page encourages sharing and prayers for Sandra and the Garza family as they navigate this devastating tragedy.

Our thoughts remain with Garza’s friends, family, and everyone who was touched by his spirit and generosity.
