Just two weeks before Clemson's season opener against LSU, head coach Dabo Swinney has been forced to make a tough call. On Saturday, he announced that defensive tackle Vic Burley has been suspended indefinitely after being arrested by university police for disorderly conduct.
Swinney didn't mince words in his statement: "Earlier today, I was made aware of defensive tackle Vic Burley's arrest by the Clemson University Police Department for disorderly conduct early Saturday morning. I have made the decision to suspend Vic from our football team indefinitely. We are extremely disappointed by his actions and decisions."
The reaction from fans has been swift and unforgiving. Many took to social media to voice their frustration, with some questioning Burley's commitment and others already looking ahead to who might replace him. One fan lamented, "Bro's going to leave Clemson as a top recruit with high expectations that didn't even come close to making an impact. woof." Another suggested, "Cut him and get one of those 5th year transfers like LSU did. Hell, offer the kid from Notre Dame that LSU just signed. There's no rules anymore." A third added, "Why is he out at that time? Isn't he injured? Shouldn't he be prepping for oh I don't know LSU, or focus on that word called AVAILABILITY. Get rid of him, take your losses and focus on '27 and the nightmare that is going to be."
Burley arrived at Clemson in 2023 as a highly touted four- or five-star recruit, with some scouts even projecting him as a potential first-round NFL Draft pick. But his production has been underwhelming so far: just 15 tackles, half a tackle for loss, and one pass defended in 21 games over two seasons.
This season was supposed to be Burley's breakout campaign on a Clemson team that desperately needs playmakers. Instead, his future with the program is now in serious doubt, and fans are wondering if he'll be remembered as a bust.
Swinney's frustration is understandable, especially given the NIL-era pressures he's been vocal about. The coach has also been dealing with external criticism, including from Paul Finebaum, who recently blasted Swinney's 'nobodies' comment after a disappointing 7-6 season.
With the LSU game looming, Clemson's defensive line depth will be tested. Burley's absence leaves a void that someone else will need to fill, and Swinney will have to rally his squad to stay focused on the task at hand.
As for Burley, his future at Clemson is uncertain. He'll have to work to regain the trust of his coaches and teammates, but for now, the suspension stands as a stark reminder of the consequences of poor decisions.
