The Minnesota Vikings' quarterback room just got a whole lot more complicated. After a rocky 2025 season, the team brought in Kyler Murray to compete with J.J. McCarthy, and now it's clear the fan base has run out of patience with the former first-round pick.
McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, had another rough outing on Saturday against the Baltimore Ravens. He completed just 5 of 10 passes for 81 yards, but it wasn't the stats that stung—it was the misses. Two brutal incompletions in the red zone, including a wide-open Myles Price on fourth down at the goal line, sparked a wave of frustration on social media.
Fans Sound Off
One fan wrote, "JJ McCarthy… if you can NOT make this throw… we know what that means." Another added, "McCarthy still has the problem that he just can't get any touch on these balls. Had another one to the outside that he throws way too hard." The criticism didn't stop there.
"This should be a layup," a third fan commented. "Get him out of Minnesota." Another declared, "Wentz has to be QB2 for the Vikings."
The frustration is understandable. McCarthy finished last season with just 1,632 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, and he hasn't shown much improvement in the preseason. With Murray now in the fold, the Vikings have a clear starter, and McCarthy's role is anything but secure.
McCarthy Takes Responsibility
After the game, McCarthy owned up to his mistakes. "I know I can make those throws," he said, via ESPN's Kevin Seifert. "And it's great to have that experience logged in and that data logged in to be able to make that throw next time."
But the fan base isn't interested in patience. They've seen enough, and they're ready for the team to move on.
What's Next for McCarthy?
The Vikings have McCarthy under contract for the next two seasons, so they could keep him on the roster and let him develop behind the scenes. But quarterbacks need reps, and McCarthy won't get many with Murray as the starter.
Could a trade be on the horizon? At just 23 years old, McCarthy still has upside, but his tape hasn't inspired much confidence. Some have speculated that Jim Harbaugh and the Los Angeles Chargers might take a flier on him, but that's just speculation at this point.
Meanwhile, the Vikings' defense is dealing with its own issues, as Jamal Adams suffered a knee injury in the same preseason game. It's been a rough start to the preseason for Minnesota.
For now, McCarthy's future in Minnesota is uncertain. The fans have spoken, and they want him out. Whether the front office listens remains to be seen.
