Five states across the Southwest and Four Corners region are on high alert this Saturday as a potent Pacific storm system bears down, threatening to unleash torrential rain and dangerous flash flooding.
According to the National Weather Service, parts of Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah should all be prepared for heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding. The agency warned that the storm will produce a multi-day threat, with Saturday expected to be the most intense period.
"A Pacific storm system will produce a multi-day heavy rainfall and flash flooding threat across the Southwest and Four Corners through the weekend – with the highest threat on Saturday," the NWS stated. Flood watches have already been issued for central Arizona and will remain in effect through the weekend.
Arizona residents are being told to brace for rainfall rates that could reach 2 inches per hour as early as Friday night. The NWS added that peak hourly rainfall of 1.0 to 1.5 inches is likely, with 15-minute bursts locally exceeding half an inch. Those intense downpours could quickly overwhelm drainage systems and trigger flash flooding in vulnerable areas.
Forecasters expect additional rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches over a six-hour window in some locations, compounding the risk as the ground becomes saturated. With the storm system lingering, repeated rounds of heavy rain could lead to significant flooding in low-lying areas, washes, and urban zones.
For those in the path of the storm, safety officials urge residents to stay informed and take precautions. Never attempt to drive through flooded roadways — it takes just a foot of moving water to sweep a vehicle away. If flooding is imminent, move to higher ground immediately and avoid walking through moving water. Keep an emergency kit handy, including water, non-perishable food, flashlights, and a battery-powered radio.
While the storm is expected to bring much-needed moisture to a drought-stricken region, the potential for dangerous flooding has authorities on edge. Residents in the affected states should monitor local forecasts and be ready to act if warnings are issued.
This weekend's weather threat comes as the sports world also deals with its own storm of news, from Alabama suspending a key player ahead of a crucial SEC showdown to Urban Meyer weighing in on a legacy-defining game in Texas. But for now, the focus in the Southwest is on the skies — and staying safe.
Hopefully, this Saturday's storm passes without major incidents, but the potential for flash flooding is serious. Stay tuned to local authorities and take all necessary precautions.
