The simmering tension between Aaron Rodgers and Matt LaFleur has boiled over again. During an appearance on the Wilde and Tausch show, Rodgers took direct aim at the Green Bay Packers head coach over a comment LaFleur made earlier this year. When asked about LaFleur's declaration that current starter Jordan Love is the best player he's ever coached, Rodgers didn't just shrug it off—he fired back with a sharp jab.
“He’s probably still mad I changed too many of his plays,” Rodgers said, referencing their time together in Green Bay. “Big statement when you had a guy win back-to-back MVPs. Guess I wasn’t doing too much at the LOS.”
Rodgers, who won consecutive MVP awards in 2020 and 2021 under LaFleur, clearly felt the comment was a slight. But he didn't stop there. With a smile, he escalated the exchange, calling LaFleur “a clown.”
“Matt’s a clown man; he says some things from time to time, then says, ‘Oh, maybe I shouldn’t have said that,'” Rodgers said.
The former Packers quarterback did offer some respect to Love, but he questioned the idea that Love could match his own prowess at the line of scrimmage. “I’m sure J. Love is real good at the line of scrimmage, but come on, man,” Rodgers added.
LaFleur took over as Packers head coach in 2019 and guided the team to a 13-4 record in each of his first three seasons, with Rodgers at the helm. Despite regular-season success, the Packers often fell short in the playoffs, and after an 8-9 season in 2022, the organization chose to move on from Rodgers, trading him to the New York Jets.
Since then, Green Bay has made three straight playoff appearances with Love, while Rodgers has gone 15-18 over the past two seasons and has just one playoff appearance in that span. The contrast has fueled the narrative that the Packers made the right call, but Rodgers clearly isn't ready to concede that point.
This isn't the first time Rodgers has publicly addressed his relationship with LaFleur. The two have rarely spoken since the trade, and the tension has lingered. Rodgers has also been open about his personal life, including his recent split from Shailene Woodley, but this latest spat is purely football—or at least, that's how Rodgers frames it.
Whether LaFleur responds remains to be seen, but Rodgers' comments add another chapter to one of the NFL's most compelling coaching-quarterback rivalries. For now, the ball is in LaFleur's court, and fans will be watching to see if he takes the bait.
