In a move that has resonated deeply with the NASCAR community, Richard Childress Racing (RCR) has decided to permanently shelve the No. 8 car driven by the late Kyle Busch. The team announced Friday that they will switch to the No. 33 car starting at Charlotte Motor Speedway, reserving the iconic No. 8 for Busch’s son, Brexton, should he ever pursue a career in racing.
“Richard Childress Racing has elected to suspend use of the No. 8 and will run the No. 33 at Charlotte Motor Speedway and beyond,” the team stated. “Kyle Busch was instrumental in the design of RCR’s stylized No. 8 and it has become synonymous with Kyle and an important symbol for his fans and the NASCAR industry. No one can carry it forward to the level that he did. The No. 8 is reserved and ready for Brexton Busch when he is ready to go NASCAR racing.”
The decision mirrors a similar tribute RCR made in 2001 when they retired Dale Earnhardt’s No. 3 car after his passing. Fans have been quick to draw parallels, praising the organization for its consistency in honoring its legends.
“As awful as it is, RCR knows how to handle tragedy better than any one else. An excellent choice and way to handle this,” one fan wrote on X. Another added, “I know some may disagree. But, I really do like and support this decision. It just feels right…” A third fan called it “Absolutely the right decision by RCR,” while a fourth noted, “A very classy move by RCR. Same thing they did back in 2001 when they suspended the use of The 3.”
The gesture has even won over new supporters. “The amount of respect I just gained for this racing organization RCR you just gained a new fan! 10000000% the best decision you could have made,” one fan declared.
Busch joined RCR in 2023 and quickly made his mark, winning in just his second race with the team. Over four seasons, he tallied three victories and numerous top-five finishes, cementing his status as one of the sport’s greats. His sudden passing has left a void, but RCR’s decision to retire the No. 8 ensures his legacy endures.
Fellow drivers have also paid heartfelt tributes. Bubba Wallace described Busch as “a monumental factor in who I am,” while Jimmie Johnson mourned “a spirit, ruthless competitor.” The outpouring of emotion underscores the impact Busch had on and off the track.
As the NASCAR world continues to grieve, RCR’s move stands out as a beacon of respect and foresight. By preserving the No. 8 for Brexton, the team has given fans a reason to look forward while honoring a remarkable career. Our thoughts remain with Busch’s family and friends during this difficult time.
