The celebration of high school prom turned to heartbreak this weekend as news broke that a Missouri prom queen was killed in a horrific car crash. Jordyn “Lunar” Williams, an 18-year-old senior at Ritenour High School, died Friday evening in a three-vehicle collision on Lewis and Clark Boulevard in St. Louis.
The crash, which occurred on the southbound lanes north of Haviland Drive, also claimed the lives of a 28-year-old woman and a 53-year-old woman. Police are still investigating the cause of the accident, which left the community reeling.
According to the official report, a 2013 Cadillac SRX sideswiped a 2020 Lexus RX350 in the southbound lanes. That impact sent the Lexus careening into oncoming northbound traffic, where it was struck on the right side by a 2013 Toyota Highlander. The Lexus overturned, while the Cadillac ran off the road and into a stand of trees.
Williams, affectionately known as “Lunar” to friends and family, had been crowned prom queen just weeks before the tragedy. Her sudden death has sparked an outpouring of grief at Ritenour High School, where she was remembered as a vibrant and beloved member of the senior class.
This heartbreaking incident adds to a growing list of recent tragedies in the sports and school community. Just last month, former basketball star Rickey Boone Jr. died in a car crash at age 22, and an Ohio high school baseball star passed away suddenly after a game. These losses serve as stark reminders of the fragility of life.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the crash to come forward as they piece together the events leading up to the collision. The investigation remains active, and no charges have been filed at this time.
The Ritenour School District has made counselors available to students and staff struggling with the loss. A vigil is planned for later this week to honor Williams and the other victims.
In a world where teen deaths from accidents are all too common, the loss of a prom queen—a symbol of youthful joy and promise—hits especially hard. The community is left to mourn a life that had so much ahead of it.
As one friend posted on social media, “She was light. She was love. She was our queen. We’ll never forget you, Lunar.”
