Golden State Warriors center Kristaps Porzingis is facing a crossroads in his career. According to multiple reports, the 31-year-old is seriously weighing the possibility of stepping away from the game, as persistent health issues continue to cloud his future on the court.

The Latvian big man, who helped the Boston Celtics capture a championship in 2024, has been sidelined indefinitely to start the 2026-27 season. He’s dealing with complications from POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome), an autoimmune condition that has triggered recurring symptoms. NBA insider Shams Charania reported that Porzingis is “seriously contemplating” retirement, with the Warriors already beginning to explore trade avenues.

Tragedy Strikes: Ex-Wife of NBA Vet Brent Barry Found Dead
Erin Marie Benavides, ex-wife of former NBA star Brent Barry, was found dead at 54 in her Port Aransas home. Police suspect suicide.

“Golden State has started exploring trade routes for Kristaps Porzingis, who is now seriously contemplating his future in basketball as he deals with recurring symptoms from the autoimmune condition termed as POTS,” Charania said.

Porzingis signed a two-year, $40 million extension with the Warriors in June, but only $3 million of the $20 million salary in the second season is guaranteed. Despite that commitment, he has yet to return to the team’s facility after missing the first two weeks of training camp and the entire preseason. He was ruled out for Wednesday’s season opener against the Los Angeles Lakers, and no clear timeline for his return has been established.

The trade market for the 7-foot-2 center has been quiet so far, leaving his future even more uncertain. If this indeed marks the end of his NBA journey, Porzingis would retire with impressive career averages of 19.5 points and 7.6 rebounds per game, alongside one All-Star selection, an All-Rookie nod, and that coveted championship ring from his time with the Celtics.

Porzingis has earned more than $235 million over his 11 seasons in the league, so financial security isn’t the driving factor. Rather, it’s the toll that his body has taken. He’s previously faced criticism and speculation about his health, and he’s had to address rumors about his condition publicly. Now, with POTS symptoms persisting, the decision to walk away seems increasingly real.

The Warriors, meanwhile, are in a delicate position. They’ve invested in Porzingis as a key piece, but with his availability in question, they may need to pivot. The team’s front office is reportedly listening to offers, though no substantial deal has emerged.

For a player who once looked like a franchise cornerstone, the possibility of an early retirement adds a poignant chapter to his story. Porzingis has battled through multiple injuries throughout his career, and his resilience has been commendable. But at some point, the physical and emotional strain can outweigh the desire to compete.

If this is indeed the end, Porzingis leaves behind a legacy of talent and tenacity. He was a force on both ends of the floor when healthy, and his impact on the Celtics’ title run was undeniable. But as the Warriors navigate this uncertainty, the basketball world watches closely, wondering if we’ve seen the last of the Latvian unicorn.

For now, the door isn’t completely shut. Porzingis hasn’t made an official announcement, and there’s still a chance a breakthrough in treatment could change the calculus. But as the season begins without him, the reality of a potential retirement looms larger than ever.
