Basketball fans were dealt a tough blow this week when Ernie Johnson revealed he'll be stepping away from his iconic role as host of Inside the NBA after the 2026-27 season. The news, which Johnson shared publicly, has sparked an immediate wave of speculation about who could possibly fill his legendary shoes.

Johnson, who has anchored the show since 1990, explained that while he's dealt with heart issues, the real reason for his departure is that the gig no longer brings him the same joy it once did. “It feels more like a challenge than a joy,” he said, making it clear that this wasn't a decision made lightly.

Tragedy Strikes: Ex-Wife of NBA Vet Brent Barry Found Dead

Despite his decades-long tenure, Johnson is surprisingly at peace with the idea of someone else taking over. “I don’t want to be blamed for ending Inside the NBA,” he said. “In my role I’m just stepping away from my role on there. I would hope they continue the show in some form. There are plenty of great studio hosts out there who could do what I do and as for what Charles Barkley is gonna do, I learned many, many moons ago that I could never predict what Chuckster is gonna do…”

His final wish for the show is clear: he hopes it lives on without him.

With that in mind, Awful Announcing’s Matt Yoder has already floated five potential replacements. One name that stands out is Adam Lefkoe, who has previously filled in as host and has chemistry with Shaquille O’Neal from past collaborations. Lefkoe’s familiarity with the cast makes him a natural fit.

Another name in the mix is Nate Burleson, though he’s considered a long shot given his current commitments. But the most intriguing possibility could be Mike Greenberg, a veteran ESPN host with a proven track record. “ESPN has a habit of giving big opportunities to big stars, and we’ve already seen that multiple times with Mike Greenberg,” Yoder wrote. “If ESPN and TNT are looking for a big name to replace Ernie Johnson, Greenberg definitely has the recognition to join the Inside the NBA team and bring instant credibility.”

Yoder also mentioned ESPN’s Malika Andrews and Scott Van Pelt as viable options. Andrews, who won a Sports Emmy in 2022, has impressed with her NBA studio work and is reportedly gaining traction as a trendy pick, according to OutKick’s Bobby Burack. “I asked around yesterday about who would replace Ernie Johnson on Inside the NBA,” Burack said. “No one seemed to know for certain yet (it’s early), but each person mentioned they thought it’d be [Andrews].”

While no official decision has been made, the search for Johnson’s successor is already heating up. Whether it’s a familiar face like Lefkoe or a fresh voice like Andrews, the next host will have big sneakers to fill. For now, fans can enjoy Johnson’s final seasons, knowing that his retirement announcement has set the stage for an exciting new chapter in NBA broadcasting.
