The sports world is mourning the loss of Ciara Mageean, a cherished Olympic runner who passed away on Sunday morning at the age of 34. The Northern Ireland native, who had recently tied the knot, succumbed to stage four bowel cancer, a diagnosis she received in May 2025.
Mageean was a two-time Summer Olympian, representing her country at the 2016 and 2020 Games. Her athletic career was marked by resilience and triumph, including a silver medal in the 1500 meters at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. An Achilles injury kept her from competing at the 2024 Olympics, but her impact on the track and in the hearts of fans remained undiminished.
Her family released a heartbreaking statement: “At 6.30am this morning, Ciara lost her battle with cancer surrounded by her loved ones. A beloved daughter, sister, wife, friend and inspiration to so many, she will be deeply missed. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam (may her soul rest in peace).”
Athletics Ireland also paid tribute, saying, “We are heartbroken. An inspiration to so many, Ciara will be remembered for her courage, kindness and incredible spirit. Our deepest sympathies are with her family, friends and loved ones at this difficult time. Rest in peace, Ciara.”
Patrick Kielty, who had Mageean on his show, added, “Nothing made Ciara prouder than pulling on her Ireland vest. But as a proud Portaferry woman, she wasn’t just a champion on the track. She was a champion of others who showed us all how to live. A privilege to have had her on the Late Late Show.”
Fans have flooded social media with their grief. One wrote, “So sad, so soon to lose her life after diagnosis in 2025 God love her and all her family 😔.” Another expressed, “Dreadful. Healthy 34 year olds shouldn’t be dying. There is something very wrong somewhere. May Ciara rest in peace and condolences to her family.”
Others pointed to the aggressive nature of her illness, with one fan noting, “July 2025 diagnosis of bowel cancer. Dead just over a year later-Thats hyper aggressive. Why are we seeing so many of these young athletes die with such turbo like cancers.” Another added, “Very sad. So young. There appears to be an increase in these type of cancers specifically. While we can’t say the exact cause in Ciara’s situation, but medical professionals think diet and ultra processed foods is one contributory factor as to why so many younger people are dying.”
Mageean’s legacy extends beyond her medals. She was an inspiration to many, a symbol of determination and grace. Her sudden passing is a stark reminder of life’s fragility, and the sports community stands united in grief. As we remember her, we also reflect on the tragic loss of other young talents and the importance of cherishing every moment.
In the wake of this loss, the heartbreak felt by fans is palpable, echoing the sorrow seen in other recent passings. Mageean’s spirit will live on in the memories of those she touched, and her story serves as a poignant reminder of the battles fought beyond the track. Rest in peace, Ciara.
