The countdown to the John Madden biopic has NFL fans on edge, and the latest trailer just poured fuel on the fire. With Nicolas Cage stepping into the legendary coach's shoes, expectations were sky-high—but the new footage has left many shaking their heads.
Prime Movies dropped a 37-second teaser on Tuesday, featuring Cage as Madden breaking down a play with the Telestrator alongside his longtime broadcast partner Pat Summerall, played by Joel Murray. But instead of excitement, the clip sparked a wave of mockery and disappointment. Fans quickly pointed out that Cage barely resembles Madden and seems to make little effort to mimic his iconic voice.
The trailer has exploded on X, racking up over 7.3 million views in just 24 hours. The response? Overwhelmingly negative. One user wrote, “I mean this is basically a desecration of Madden’s legacy. Astoundingly bad.” Another chimed in, “That’s a really bad impersonation job of John Madden. How did this get greenlit?”
The criticism didn’t stop there. “The Norm Macdonald School of putting no effort into an impersonation,” joked a third. Others were more direct: “I’ve never pushed for a movie to not be released… but John Madden deserves better. This is an embarrassment to his legacy.” One fan even declared, “Might actually be the worst impression ever.”
This isn’t the first time fans have predicted disaster for the project. From the moment Cage’s casting was announced, questions swirled about whether the Academy Award winner could do justice to a Hall of Fame coach and beloved broadcaster. The supporting cast—featuring Christian Bale, Kathryn Hahn, and comedian Shane Gillis—has drawn praise, but if the lead doesn’t resonate, the film could be dead on arrival.
The backlash adds to a growing list of concerns about the movie’s potential. Even with a solid ensemble, the title character is the heart of the story, and fans aren’t convinced Cage delivers. Some are already drawing parallels to the Madden curse, though this time the curse might be on the film itself.
Given the negative buzz, the limited theatrical release before hitting Prime Video might be a blessing in disguise. Box office numbers could look rough if the title character doesn’t win over audiences. But for now, the internet has made its verdict clear: Cage’s Madden impression is leaving fans cringing.
