Jake Paul's boxing career hangs in the balance after a devastating injury. The former Vine and YouTube star, who has raked in hundreds of millions of dollars in the ring, suffered a fractured jaw during his fight against Anthony Joshua. Now, he might never fight again.
Paul, 29, has faced a who's who of combat sports, including Mike Tyson, Anderson Silva, Tyron Woodley, Nate Diaz, and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. But this latest setback could be the final bell for his boxing journey.
In a candid interview on The Ariel Helwani Show, Paul opened up about the severity of his injury and the uncertainty surrounding his future. He revealed that his doctor, Arman, has already advised him to hang up the gloves.
“Yeah, I’m getting some new scans here in a couple of days of the jaw,” Paul said. “We’ll see what my doctors say. You know, can I even fight again? That is definitely in the realm of possibilities. It does, like, feel a lot better but I definitely need to get cleared.”
The younger brother of Logan Paul admitted that the thought of retirement has crossed his mind. “Yeah, those thoughts have definitely come up,” he said. “Yeah, definitely my doctor Arman, shoutout to Arman, but he doesn’t want me to fight again.”
The injury is more complicated than just a broken bone. Paul also lost a tooth and may need an implant, which could further delay any potential return. “I think it just depends on like how the bone heals and then also there’s like a tooth missing here, like I’m pretty sure I’m going to have to get an implanted tooth of some sort,” he explained. “I don’t know how much time that’s going to add to things. We just have to see. Figure out what the smartest thing is for me.”
This news comes as a shock to fans who have watched Paul transform from a social media personality into a legitimate boxing draw. His fights have drawn massive pay-per-view numbers and brought a new audience to the sport. But now, his career is at a crossroads.
Paul's situation echoes the uncertainty faced by other athletes after serious injuries. For example, Cubs ace Matthew Boyd is out after a knee injury while playing with kids, highlighting how quickly a career can change. Similarly, Paul's injury occurred in the ring, but its impact could be just as career-altering.
The boxing world is waiting to see what the scans reveal. If Paul is cleared, he could continue his rise in the sport. If not, his career—which started with a bang on Vine and grew into a global phenomenon—could end with a whimper.
For now, Paul is focused on healing. “We’ll see what my doctors say,” he said. “Figure out what the smartest thing is for me.”
