The American skiing community is in mourning after the sudden passing of TJ Lanning, a former U.S. Ski Team alpine skier who left an indelible mark on the slopes. He was 41 years old.
Lanning first burst onto the national scene in 2001 when he captured the No. 1 ranking for juniors in both slalom and super-G. That early success set the stage for a promising career, and in 2007 he earned the honor of representing the United States at the World Championships in Are, Sweden. His aggressive style and raw talent made him a fan favorite among ski racing enthusiasts.
Sadly, Lanning's competitive career was cut short by a devastating crash in November 2009. He suffered a fractured neck and a serious left knee injury during a training run, forcing him into early retirement. Despite that abrupt end, he remained deeply connected to the sport he loved.
U.S. Ski & Snowboard confirmed the news Tuesday night, releasing a heartfelt statement that captured the loss. “We are deeply saddened by the passing of TJ Lanning, a former U.S. Ski Team alpine skier and coach whose impact on our sport went far beyond his years of competition,” the organization said. “Our thoughts are with his family, friends and children during this difficult time.”
Following the announcement, an outpouring of grief spread across social media. Friends, former teammates, and even parents of young skiers he coached shared memories of a man whose smile could light up any mountain. “TJ it was amazing to get to know you and call you a friend, till we meet again in the sky,” one person wrote.
Another added: “I feel incredibly lucky to have known TJ through ski racing. His smile lit up every ski hill he was on, and he brought so much energy to the people around him. Today our ski community has lost someone special. My heart is with his family, his children, and everyone who loved him.”
One local coach recalled working with Lanning’s child in a youth program: “My heart breaks for his children. I had the pleasure of coaching one of them in one of our local programs. He was genuinely just a great person.”
Lanning’s death is the latest reminder of how fragile life can be, even for elite athletes. In a sports world that often focuses on former pros transitioning to coaching or sudden scandals in college athletics, the loss of a beloved figure like Lanning hits especially hard. The ski community has rallied around his family, sharing stories of his warmth and dedication both on and off the hill.
As the news settles, those who knew him are left with memories of a man who gave everything to the sport. “He brought so much energy to the people around him,” a friend said. “We’ve lost someone truly special.”
Our thoughts are with Lanning’s family, friends, and everyone whose lives he touched.
