The sports world is mourning the sudden loss of a beloved behind-the-scenes figure. Stosh Cienki, a longtime ESPN Radio producer, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 52, and now an official cause of death has been confirmed.
Cienki, who had been a staple at ESPN Radio for years, died shortly after undergoing a surgical procedure on his ankle. According to reports, he had shared an update on his recovery just a day before his passing, noting that x-rays showed no signs of infection. Tragically, the very next day, he suffered a pulmonary embolism—a sudden blockage in a lung artery—which proved fatal.
The news has sent shockwaves through the ESPN community, with tributes flooding social media from former colleagues and friends. Sarah Spain, a former ESPN host, shared an emotional remembrance on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “After several producers we had finally found our guy in Stosh—supportive, kind, hard working, full of great ideas and as steady and dependable as they come. I won’t share the texts we’ve exchanged in the years since, but I’ll say that he never stopped being that steady, supportive and kind voice well after we stopped working together. Stosh was a gem, and I’m so heartbroken for his family and everyone who loved him. RIP friend.”
Another former ESPN personality, Bomani Jones, paid tribute with a heartfelt post: “stosh was the first producer of the right time. only guy i know who loved kc sports more than my buddy nick. may he rest in peace.” Mike Golic Jr. also expressed his sorrow, saying, “Devastating news. Stosh was a great teammate and friend to so many of us who have come through ESPN Radio over the years. Praying for his wife and family on this incredibly sad day.”
Cienki's impact extended far beyond his professional duties. Known for his unwavering support, creativity, and dependability, he was a mentor and friend to many in the industry. His passion for Kansas City sports was legendary, and his warm personality left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of working with him.
The sudden nature of his passing has also sparked conversations about the risks of pulmonary embolisms, particularly after surgery. While such complications are rare, they serve as a reminder of the importance of post-operative care and monitoring. For those in the sports media world, the loss is deeply personal, as Cienki was not just a colleague but a cherished member of the ESPN family.
As the sports community comes to terms with this tragedy, the outpouring of love and respect for Cienki is a testament to the kind of person he was. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the memories he created during his time at ESPN Radio.
Our thoughts are with Cienki's family, friends, and all who had the honor of knowing him. May he rest in peace.
