Angel Reese has never been one to shy away from the spotlight, but last Sunday's loss to Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever hit harder than most. The Atlanta Dream star had a golden opportunity to seal a victory with a game-winning layup, but the ball rimmed out, and the moment slipped away.
In the aftermath, social media had a field day, mocking Reese for the miss for nearly 24 hours. For a competitor like Reese, the weight of that moment was heavy. She admitted that the loss lingered long after the final buzzer, keeping her up at night.
“I didn’t sleep, and the competitor in me wanted to win that game so bad,” Reese said via the New York Post. “I replayed that play so many times, but I’m like: Why would I let one moment dictate everything else that I have going on that is positive?”
The mental toll was evident, but Reese found a way to channel that frustration into fuel. Just two days later, she returned to the court against the Las Vegas Aces and delivered a statement performance, posting 21 points and 10 rebounds in Atlanta’s 97-82 victory.
“So just being able to show up again for my team. It would have been negative for me not to come out tonight and just bounce back, and I knew they expected it from me,” Reese explained. “So just being able to do it obviously against [Wilson], trying to deflect as many passes as I can. I mean, she’s going to get her shots up, of course. But just knowing my spots and how great I am defensively to put pressure on her.”
Reese’s resilience is a testament to her growth, both as a player and a person. This season, she’s been a force for the Dream, averaging 15.7 points and 12.0 rebounds per game. Her ability to shake off a tough loss and deliver when it matters most has earned her respect across the league.
The WNBA is about to go on break, but Reese won’t be resting. She’s set to represent the United States in the FIBA World Cup, with the team’s campaign kicking off on Sept. 4 against China. It’s a chance for her to shine on the international stage and put any lingering doubts to rest.
Reese’s recent struggles also highlight the intense scrutiny that comes with being a high-profile athlete. The spotlight can be unforgiving, and the pressure to perform is constant. But as she’s shown, the key is to keep moving forward, learning from each setback.
Her bounce-back performance against the Aces is a reminder that even the toughest moments can be turned into opportunities for growth. And with the World Cup on the horizon, Reese has plenty of chances to prove that she’s more than capable of rising to the occasion.
