The sports world is mourning the loss of a bright young talent after South African figure skater Kira Meyer died at just 12 years old. The tragic accident that took her life has left the skating community in shock and grief.

Kira was admitted to the intensive care unit in a coma following an electronic scooter accident. Her mother, Angelique Meyer, shared the devastating update on Mother's Day, revealing that Kira had been declared brain dead by three doctors. Her lungs also failed, and despite being kept on life support, she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.

Live TV Carjacking: Mexican Sports Reporter Robbed at Gunpoint During Broadcast
Fernando Vargas, a Mexican sports reporter, was carjacked at gunpoint live on air in Morelos. He's safe but shaken; the robber is still wanted.

“I have been sitting with my phone on my lap for the last 30 minutes to get the words. Kira was declared brain dead by 3 doctors yesterday. Her lungs also gave in. Although she is still connected to machines, she is already safe at Jesus’ feet,” Angelique Meyer wrote on Facebook.

She added that the family is struggling to process the loss. “This is an unnatural death as the drs explained and tests and processes must be followed before she is declared dead whole. At this point, we as her parents are still trying to make sense of everything and we are not yet ready for the post with ‘rest in peace’ or ‘angel wings.’ We as her parents will speak the words when the time is right, when her little body is no longer connected to machines and when we have a time of death.”

Outpouring of Support

Prayers and tributes have flooded in from the skating community and beyond. South African Figure Skating posted a heartfelt message on Instagram, remembering Kira as a cherished member of their community.

“Kira was a cherished member of our skating community, and her presence, both on and off the ice, will be deeply missed,” the organization wrote. “On behalf of @safigureskating, we extend our sincere and heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, coaches, and fellow skaters during this time of great loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.”

The accident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with electric scooters, which have been involved in numerous incidents worldwide. Just recently, a safety warning about similar vehicles was issued after a Utah coach's freak accident.

A Life Cut Short

Kira was known for her passion and grace on the ice, and her loss is deeply felt by all who knew her. A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, May 22, where friends, family, and fellow skaters will gather to say goodbye.

Her story echoes other recent tragedies in the sports world, such as the hospitalization of a Texas track coach after a freak shot put accident, and the death of a beloved St. Louis journalist in a freak highway accident. These incidents underscore how quickly life can change.

As the Meyer family navigates this unimaginable loss, the skating community and sports fans around the world are holding them close in their thoughts. Kira's memory will live on through the joy she brought to the ice and the lives she touched.
