The St. Louis media world is reeling after the sudden, tragic death of Ray Hartmann, a beloved reporter and TV personality who was killed in a freak highway accident. Hartmann, 64, was driving on Interstate 64 when a tire from a passing semi-truck broke free, flew through the air, and crashed through his windshield, authorities confirmed.

According to Missouri State Highway Patrol, two tires came off the semi-trailer, struck the median, and went airborne. One of them pierced Hartmann's windshield, leading to his death. The semi driver pulled over and remained at the scene, investigators told KSDK.

His sharp wit, deep knowledge of local politics, and genuine love for the city made him a household name.

“I am so deeply saddened to hear that Ray Hartmann was killed in a car accident yesterday,” said U.S. Congresswoman Ann Wagner. “Ray was well known across our community as a fixture on Donnybrook and through the numerous news organizations he owned during his career as a journalist. I am praying for Ray and his family during this tragic time.”

The news has sparked an outpouring of grief on social media. “Such a tragedy for his family, his friends, his fans and for St Louis media!💔” one fan posted. Another wrote, “Feeling very sad … and a little sick upon hearing the news about Ray Hartmann … lucky to know him.”

“May his soul rest in peace. 🙏,” one supporter wrote. The sentiment has been echoed by dozens of colleagues, politicians, and fans who remember Hartmann as a mentor, a friend, and a true journalist.

As the investigation continues, the community is left to mourn a man who gave so much to St. Louis. His legacy will live on through the publications he founded, the shows he hosted, and the countless lives he touched.
