Jim Ross, the voice of a generation of wrestling fans, is facing another tough battle. The legendary announcer, known to millions as simply "JR," has revealed that he will undergo brain surgery on Wednesday morning to address an issue with a shunt that was placed during his previous operation.
Ross, 74, has been open about his health struggles since undergoing brain surgery two months ago. While that initial surgery was successful, complications have arisen. During a recent episode of his podcast, "Grilling JR," he shared that the shunt has been causing problems, and he's also dealing with a potential kidney concern.
"I saw a little spot of something on my kidney," Ross said. "So we're running a lot of tests. I'm getting…my shunts are bothering me in my brain. So I'm going to get a scan tomorrow and get that back to my neurosurgeon so he can tell me what the hell's wrong. It may just need to be adjusted, that's my take on it."
On Monday night, Ross took to social media to share the news and ask for support from the wrestling community. "Getting another brain surgery Wednesday morning to address an issue with my shunt. Positive thoughts appreciated. Thanks," he wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The response was immediate and heartfelt. Fans and colleagues alike flooded the comments with messages of encouragement and love. Sports media personality Richard Deitsch wrote, "Big prayers up, JR." One fan added, "You may be the newest toughest SOB I know! You've got this cowboy." Another said, "The best of luck please come back and give us an update that it all went well."
Ross's resilience has long been admired, and this latest hurdle is no exception. He's faced numerous health challenges over the years, including a bout with cancer and a serious intestinal issue, but he's always fought through with characteristic grit and optimism.
As he prepares for this procedure, the outpouring of support underscores the deep connection he has forged with fans over his decades-long career. From his iconic calls of "Oh my God!" to his memorable catchphrases, Ross has been a constant presence in the wrestling world, and his impact is immeasurable.
This news comes on the heels of other recent losses in the sports broadcasting community, including the passing of Lakers announcer Lawrence Tanter and legendary swimming coach Frank Busch. It's a reminder of the fragility of life, but also of the strength of the human spirit.
Our thoughts are with Jim Ross and his family as he undergoes this surgery. We join his legion of fans in wishing him a successful procedure and a speedy recovery. As one supporter aptly put it, "Hang in there and know that your fans have your back."
