The WNBA finds itself in hot water once again, this time over a friendly wager that has fans calling for disciplinary action against two of its biggest stars. Angel Reese of the Atlanta Dream and Paige Bueckers of the Dallas Wings are at the center of a controversy that erupted after a video posted on the league's official social media page showed them discussing a $400 bet made during All-Star Weekend.
The clip, which quickly went viral, captures Bueckers being asked about the wager, while another piece of footage shows Reese holding up several hundred-dollar bills while talking to Bueckers. The situation escalated Wednesday night after the Dream edged out the Wings 82-81, when Reese was asked about her recent conversation with Bueckers. Her response didn't help calm things down.
“I will be requesting her Apple Pay after this,” Reese said during her postgame media availability, essentially confirming the bet.
While the league has yet to make a formal decision, social media erupted with demands for a suspension. One fan commented, “Wait… so WNBA, when are we fining and suspending Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers?” Another added, “If history is any indication, the WNBA should already be preparing to suspend Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers immediately while it conducts a full investigation. We now have a video admission… and separate footage appearing to show cash changing hands over a wager involving their own game.”
The outcry has been fierce, with some comparing the situation to how other major leagues handle gambling. “I know they were messing around, but if this was a professional league, they’d be banned for the rest of the season,” one fan wrote. “They should be suspended at least five games each. You don’t mess around with gambling, especially not on your own team.” Another user went further, saying, “Reason #556,779 of why the WNBA will never be taken seriously, publicly posting video of players betting on games should force a federal investigation. If this was the MLB or NFL they would be automatically banned for life.”
This isn't the first time these two have made headlines. Reese has been at the center of controversy before, including taking heat when Caitlin Clark opened up about her mental toll. Bueckers, meanwhile, has had her share of drama, including her side-eye during a Caitlin Clark interview that sparked plenty of discussion.
According to the WNBA's bylaws on gambling, the league has clear authority to act. Section 5(c) states: “Any player found by the Commissioner after a hearing to have been guilty of wagering (directly or indirectly), or of offering or attempting to wager, money or anything of value on the outcome, score, or any other aspect of any WNBA Competition shall, in the sole discretion of the Commissioner, be subject to a fine, suspension, and/or dismissal and disqualification from any further association with the WNBA.”
Professional sports leagues have long taken a hard line against gambling to protect the integrity of the game. If the WNBA wants to send a strong message, fining or suspending Reese and Bueckers would be the logical step. However, the league may also consider the context—was this a harmless joke between friends, or a genuine violation of league rules?
As fans wait for an official response, the pressure is mounting. The WNBA has an opportunity to demonstrate that it takes gambling seriously, but it must also weigh the potential backlash from punishing two of its most marketable stars. Either way, this story is far from over.
