The NFL is no stranger to quarterback rivalries, but the latest chapter between Tom Brady and Matt Ryan isn't being written on the field—it's unfolding in the front office. And according to one coach, it's Ryan who has the league's decision-makers losing sleep.
Both former signal-callers have transitioned into executive roles since retiring. Brady bought a stake in the Las Vegas Raiders, while Ryan was named president of football operations for the Atlanta Falcons. On the surface, their second acts seem similar. But the buzz around the league suggests a stark difference in how they're approaching their new jobs.
During a recent episode of PFT Live, Mike Florio shared a revealing conversation he had with a coach about the two icons. The coach's message was clear: don't worry about Brady—he's spread too thin. It's Ryan who should scare you.
“I did hear from one coach that was like, ‘Hey, quit complaining about Brady. We like this. Brady is spread too thin,'” Florio said. “Now, the Raiders are 3–1, so in the short-term, the theory is being challenged, but Brady's not all in.”
Florio elaborated on Brady's many ventures, from runway walks to Gucci ads to watch endorsements to his broadcasting gig at FOX—all while supposedly running the Raiders. “Go ahead. Let him do all of the stuff he's going to do. Let him walk the runway. Let him do Gucci ads. Let him advertise watches. Let him do this, let him do that. Let him work for FOX while he's supposedly running the Raiders,” he said.
But Ryan, Florio stressed, is a different animal. “Matt Ryan's the one I'm concerned about. Because he's there. He's there all the time. He's getting himself fully immersed.” He added, “He's all in with the Falcons, and there are teams that are concerned about it.”
That sentiment echoes what many in Atlanta have noticed. Ryan, who also had a broadcasting opportunity, chose to step away from the microphone to dedicate himself entirely to the Falcons. The early returns have been promising, with the team showing signs of a clear direction under his leadership.
The contrast between the two couldn't be starker. Brady's celebrity status and myriad off-field projects have left some wondering how much focus he can realistically give to the Raiders. Meanwhile, Ryan's singular devotion to Atlanta has made him a quiet but formidable presence in the league's executive circles.
It's a twist that few saw coming. When both were playing, Brady was the undisputed king of clutch moments, while Ryan was often the bridesmaid. Now, in the front-office arena, the tables have turned. Teams that once feared Brady's on-field brilliance are now more wary of Ryan's behind-the-scenes work ethic.
As the season progresses, the Raiders' early success will test the theory that Brady's distractions are a problem. But for now, the word around the league is clear: keep an eye on Atlanta, because Matt Ryan isn't just dipping his toes in—he's diving headfirst.
