Picture this: the 2027 NFL season opens, and under center stands a 50-year-old Tom Brady. Crazy? Maybe not. According to the man who literally wrote the book on Brady, a return to the gridiron at the half-century mark is far from impossible.

Lars Anderson, author of Brady: An American Story and The Price of Greatness, told Front Office Sports Tonight that he wouldn't be stunned if the legendary quarterback suits up again. Brady last played in 2022, and by the time the 2027 season arrives, he'll be 50 years old.

Mahomes Praises Crosby as Chiefs-Raiders Rivalry Heats Up
Patrick Mahomes and Maxx Crosby share mutual respect ahead of their Week 4 clash, with Mahomes praising Crosby's competitiveness and drive.

"I do think that if Tom had his druthers, he would be playing right now," Anderson said. "And I would not be shocked if he somehow tries to play next year."

That's a bold claim for a guy who already owns seven Super Bowl rings. But Anderson believes Brady is haunted by the one that got away. "I think he wishes he got number eight," Anderson said. "I think he wishes circumstances could have been different and he could have kept playing."

A Broken Man in 2022

Anderson points to Brady's final season as the emotional low point. The 2022 campaign unfolded against the backdrop of his divorce from supermodel Gisele Bündchen, and Anderson says the toll was visible.

"Never in his life had he ever looked so unlike Tom Brady," Anderson said. "Then at that moment, this was a picture of a broken man."

The biographer added that Brady was devastated by the split. "He was devastated that she wanted to end their life together, for sure," Anderson said. He admitted the topic makes him uncomfortable, saying, "I certainly wouldn't want somebody flashing a spotlight on my behavior that caused me to get a divorce when my kids were little."

What Stands in the Way?

Plenty. Brady is currently locked into a massive contract with Fox Sports worth over $300 million. He's also a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders. To even consider a comeback, he'd have to divest his ownership stake in the Raiders — no small hurdle.

Brady himself has been coy. Last spring, he told CNBC he had "inquired" about a potential return in the past, but insisted he's "very happily retired." Still, Anderson's speculation raises the question: would anyone really be shocked if Brady gave it one more shot?

The answer, increasingly, seems to be no. Brady's competitive fire has never been in question. His selfish legacy and divorce drama have been dissected in the press, but his drive to win remains legendary. If he truly believes he can chase that elusive eighth ring, don't bet against him.

For now, Brady stays busy in the broadcast booth and the owner's suite. But as Anderson's comments suggest, the door isn't closed. And in a league where surprises happen weekly, a 50-year-old Brady under center might be the wildest — and most fitting — comeback story yet.
