The Minnesota Vikings are sending a clear signal that J.J. McCarthy's time with the team may be coming to an abrupt end. After a rocky 2025 season and a free-agent addition at quarterback, the former first-round pick is now fighting just to keep a roster spot—not for the starting job.
McCarthy, who missed his entire rookie year due to injury, returned in 2025 but struggled to find consistency. He completed just 57.6% of his passes for 1,632 yards, tossing 11 touchdowns against 12 interceptions. That performance wasn't enough to convince the Vikings to pass on the quarterback market, and they inked Kyler Murray to a one-year deal this offseason, making him the clear starter.
But the real shock came when reports emerged that McCarthy was splitting second-team reps with Carson Wentz. If Wentz wins the backup job, McCarthy could find himself on the outside looking in—or on the trade block.
Trade Winds Blowing in Minnesota?
Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio believes the Vikings might move McCarthy before the 53-man roster deadline this weekend. "Wentz was a capable backup in 2025 for the Vikings, despite not signing until late August. With a full offseason, training camp, and preseason in the system, Wentz would be in even better position to fill in for Murray, if necessary," Florio wrote.
Florio added that with Max Brosmer also on the roster, McCarthy's spot is far from secure. "The Vikings undoubtedly would try to trade him, since the balance of his 2026 pay ($1.075 million) and all of his 2027 compensation ($3.775 million) are fully guaranteed. The Vikings may have to pay a significant chunk of the money in order to facilitate a deal."
Who Could Come Calling?
If McCarthy becomes available, a few teams could pounce. The Los Angeles Chargers, led by Jim Harbaugh—who once praised McCarthy as the best quarterback in his draft class—could be a natural fit. Harbaugh said before the 2024 draft, "I think he plays quarterback the best of any quarterback in the draft. He's incredible. So, big market, small market. Cold weather, hot weather, it won't matter."
The Cleveland Browns are another potential landing spot. With Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders both struggling in the preseason, Cleveland might be eager to add a young arm with upside. And don't forget the fan frustration that has been brewing—some Vikings supporters have already called for McCarthy's exit.
For now, McCarthy's future hangs in the balance. Whether he's traded, released, or somehow survives the cut, one thing is clear: the Vikings are taking steps toward moving on from their former franchise hopeful.
