Houston TV anchor Daniella Guzman is facing serious scrutiny after reports surfaced that she accepted complimentary tickets to the World Cup, landing her in a professional quagmire.
According to The Texas Voice, Guzman received three tickets to the Portugal vs. DR Congo match on June 17, as well as tickets to a Bruno Mars concert at NRG Stadium. The tickets were provided by the Harris County Sports and Convention Corporation (HCSCC), the organization behind the city's hosting of the tournament.
The potential conflict of interest has raised eyebrows, particularly given Guzman's role as a news anchor for KPRC-TV. Accepting gifts from a government entity that benefits from media coverage could violate the station's ethical guidelines.
KPRC-TV general manager Sean McLaughlin acknowledged the situation, stating, Our station takes journalistic ethics very seriously along with anything that could potentially create even the appearance of a conflict of interest.
He declined further comment, citing the matter as a personnel issue.
As of now, Guzman has not publicly addressed the allegations.
The controversy extends beyond Guzman. The report also revealed that Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo and four county commissioners received World Cup tickets from HCSCC. Commissioner Rodney Ellis accepted eight tickets to the Bruno Mars concert, four tickets each to the June 17 and June 29 matches, and two tickets to the July 4 match. His chief of staff, Brandon Dudley, received two concert tickets and two to the June 29 game. Commissioner Adrian Garcia got six concert tickets and four each to the June 26 and July 4 matches, while Commissioner Tom Ramsey received four tickets to the June 29 match and two to the July 4 game.
This isn't the first time World Cup ticket distribution has caused controversy. Earlier this year, Melania Trump's $3,000 World Cup final outfit sparked outrage, highlighting the ongoing debate over ethics and optics surrounding the event.
For Guzman, the stakes are high. A finding of misconduct could damage her credibility and career. The station's internal investigation will determine whether she violated company policy, which prohibits accepting gifts that could compromise journalistic integrity.
