The sports world is in mourning after the passing of David Moulton, a beloved NFL broadcaster and spotter, who died at the age of 59. His wife, Julie, confirmed the heartbreaking news on Sunday, revealing that Moulton lost his six-year battle with stage four renal cell cancer, which had spread to his bones. He passed away peacefully while in hospice care at the Douglas Center for Caring.
Troy Aikman, the Hall of Fame quarterback turned broadcaster, is absolutely devastated. Moulton had been Aikman's right-hand man in the Fox Sports broadcast booth since 2018, and their professional partnership quickly blossomed into a deep friendship. Aikman took to social media to express his grief, writing, "Since 2018, David Moulton has been my right-hand man in the broadcast booth. What started as a professional relationship became a friendship I have cherished. David was loyal, dependable and a warrior until the very end. He deserved better. My heart breaks for his family and all who loved him. I’m grateful for the years we shared and will miss him deeply. Rest in peace big guy."
Moulton's impact extended far beyond his work with Aikman. He had a long and distinguished career in sports media, working for CBS Sports as well as Fox Sports. For nearly two decades, he served as a researcher and spotter for CBS college football broadcasts, teaming up with analyst Gary Danielson. Danielson, who first discovered Moulton through his local radio show, also shared a touching tribute.
"Yesterday was a day I was praying would not happen," Danielson wrote. "David Moulton was my researcher/spotter with our CBS college football crew since 2006!! We first met when I heard him doing a local radio show; became intrigued with his knowledge, decided to cold call him and offered him a job!! He was great and helped make our broadcast better. More importantly for me, David grew into being my most trusted friend."
Danielson went on to praise Moulton's character, saying, "During our travels together, we talked sports, but also so much more about life. I will miss him dearly. With deepest sorrow I want to send my condolences and love to Julie, his family and his beloved mother, Kit, who was his biggest supporter. David, you have so many friends that are all hurting today. Love you and will miss our talks, David!!"
The news of Moulton's death has sent shockwaves through the NFL community, with many remembering him not only for his professional contributions but also for his warm personality and unwavering determination. His wife's heartfelt statement painted a picture of a man who never gave up, even in the face of overwhelming odds.
"It is with a completely shattered heart broken into a million pieces I share that my loving husband, David, died last night while in hospice care at the Douglas Center for Caring," Julie wrote. "David battled stage four renal cell cancer for six long years. It metastasized to his bones two years ago. He never stopped fighting or trying new treatments. He loved life and loved each and every one of you more than words can express. We are so thankful for the love and support you all have given us."
Moulton's legacy is one of dedication, friendship, and resilience. He was a fixture in the broadcast booth, a trusted confidant, and a beloved figure in the sports media world. His passing is a profound loss, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
As the sports world mourns, many are reminded of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing those we hold dear. Moulton's memory will live on through the countless lives he touched, both on and off the air. Rest in peace, David Moulton.
