A devastating accident unfolded Tuesday morning in Belgium, where a school bus carrying children collided with a train, leaving several people dead and others injured. The crash occurred near the town of Buggenhout, about 20 miles northwest of Brussels, during the morning rush hour.
According to authorities, at least four people lost their lives in the tragedy. Among the victims were two children, aged 12 and 15, as well as the bus driver and an escort. Five other children were hospitalized with serious injuries, officials confirmed.
Lisa De Wilde, spokesperson for the East Flanders public prosecutor’s office, stated that the minibus drove through a closed crossing barrier before the collision. Security camera footage showed the bus, carrying nine people, was moving when the train struck it. The impact was described as "extremely violent" by local authorities.
The train involved in the crash carried approximately 100 passengers. Remarkably, no injuries were reported among those on the train. The collision has sent shockwaves through the community and the nation.
