Sophie Cunningham is soaking up the Lone Star State vibe this weekend. The 30-year-old WNBA guard was spotted at the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, where she traded the basketball court for the racetrack — and did it in true Texas fashion.
Cunningham, who just wrapped up a season with the Indiana Fever that ended in a first-round playoff loss to the Las Vegas Aces, turned heads in a cowgirl-inspired outfit as she took in the action at the Circuit of the Americas. She posted a photo of the look to her Instagram Story, giving fans a glimpse of her race-day style.
The appearance comes at a pivotal time for Cunningham, who is entering free agency this offseason. The Fever recently made headlines by parting ways with team president Kelly Krauskopf and general manager Amber Cox on Friday, a move that caught many off guard.
“There was not a lot of warning, and that’s okay. I think that’s probably a good thing, that you kind of keep it in-house a little bit,” Cunningham said, via the Yahoo Sports TikTok account.
Despite the sudden changes, Cunningham had nothing but praise for the outgoing executives. “But you know what, Kelly and Amber, they’re phenomenal, phenomenal people. They cared a lot about us, as individuals and as players outside the court. And so I have nothing but great things to say about them. Hoping the Fever come in and bring people who can do a really good job for that program,” she continued.
“I was blessed to be under Kelly and Amber, and I hope them the very best. And so we’ll see what happens,” she added.
Sunday’s race, which begins at 4 p.m. ET, marks the 18th round of the Formula 1 season and kicks off a three-race stretch in the Americas. Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli enter as the favorites, and fans are buzzing about the potential for an exciting showdown.
Cunningham’s presence at the Grand Prix adds a fun crossover moment between the WNBA and motorsport worlds, and her outfit choice has already sparked plenty of reactions online. Whether she’s cheering from the stands or posting stylish updates, the Fever star is making the most of her offseason.
As she looks ahead to free agency, Cunningham’s future remains uncertain, but her personality and presence continue to shine — both on and off the track. For now, she’s enjoying the Austin atmosphere and the thrill of race day.
