Russell Wilson has a clear message for Garrett Wilson: get out of New York and head to a contender. The former NFL quarterback, speaking this week, made it plain that he believes the Jets' star wideout should push for a deal before the Nov. 10 trade deadline.
Wilson, who has been the undisputed No. 1 target in the Jets' offense, has seen his production dip recently. Over the last two games, he's managed just 70 receiving yards, and in Sunday's loss to the previously winless Miami Dolphins, he was targeted only three times. It's a frustrating stretch for a player of his caliber, and Russell Wilson thinks it's time for a change of scenery.
“If I'm Garrett Wilson, I'm going to the Kansas City Chiefs,” Russell Wilson said. “As you saw on Sunday Night Football, they were struggling to catch the football. You don't see Patrick Mahomes getting frustrated too often. They need a big receiver, and Garrett Wilson is that guy.”
The Chiefs have been dealing with drops and inconsistency from their pass-catchers, and adding a route-running technician like Wilson could be the spark they need. But Kansas City isn't the only team on Russell Wilson's list. He also pointed to the San Francisco 49ers as an ideal landing spot.
“The 49ers have a chance, and if I'm Garrett Wilson, I'm checking out the 49ers,” Wilson continued. “Kyle Shanahan should make the call. Mike Evans can make plays down in the red zone, but to find a player who can run every route for you, that's Garrett Wilson.”
Wilson's endorsement of San Francisco is notable, especially given the 49ers' recent struggles to stay healthy and consistent on offense. A player like Garrett Wilson could thrive in Shanahan's system, and his versatility would give the team a reliable target at every level of the field.
Of course, the Jets hold the cards. Wilson is under contract through 2030, and dealing him would leave New York with more than $24 million in dead money for the 2027 season. That's a hefty price for any front office to swallow, and the team has given no indication they're willing to move him.
Still, the NFL landscape can shift quickly, and a player of Wilson's talent could reshape the playoff picture if a team like the Chiefs or 49ers decides to make an aggressive offer. As the deadline approaches, all eyes will be on the Jets' front office to see if they're tempted by a king's ransom.
For now, Garrett Wilson remains in green and white, but the speculation isn't going away. Whether he stays or goes, one thing is certain: his future is one of the most intriguing storylines as the trade deadline looms.
