The New England Patriots' offseason just got a whole lot messier. The team's seventh-round draft pick, Quintayvious Hutchins, is facing a domestic assault and battery charge following an incident in Newton this Tuesday.
Hutchins, who was selected 247th overall out of Boston College, appeared in court Wednesday morning and entered a not-guilty plea. Details about what exactly happened remain scarce, but the charge alone has already sent ripples through a franchise that's been dealing with plenty of drama already.
“We are aware of the report involving Quintayvious Hutchins,” a Patriots spokesperson said. “We take these matters very seriously and are in the process of gathering additional information. We will not have further comment at this time.”
Hutchins made a name for himself at Boston College over the past two seasons, piling up 66 tackles, 5.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries, and a forced fumble. That production earned him a late-round flier from the Patriots, but now his future with the team is very much in question.
This latest incident comes on the heels of the Mike Vrabel-Russini scandal that has dominated headlines. Vrabel, the reigning Coach of the Year, was spotted with former reporter Dianna Russini in late March, leading to leaked photos and his decision to miss Day 3 of the NFL Draft for counseling.
Multiple Patriots players, including quarterback Drake Maye, have publicly backed Vrabel. “I mean, he's our head coach. I think he's done a great job of talking to us and talking us through it. I'm just looking forward to getting back to work and getting ready,” Maye said. “I know he's got the right mindset, and I know he's a great human being. I think he's … like I said, I love playing for him.”
Whether the locker room can stay united through both the Vrabel drama and now Hutchins' legal trouble remains to be seen. Some analysts believe the Vrabel situation could actually bring the team closer, but a domestic assault charge is a different beast entirely.
