The Carolina Panthers are hitting the reset button on their defense just hours after a primetime defeat. In a swift and decisive move, the team has parted ways with defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero and defensive passing game coordinator Jonathan Cooley, according to reports from ESPN's Jeremy Fowler and NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.
Evero, who had been at the helm of the Panthers' defense since the 2023 season, saw his tenure end abruptly following Thursday's loss to the Green Bay Packers. The decision came as a surprise to many, especially given that Evero was a candidate for the Las Vegas Raiders' head-coaching vacancy last offseason. But the Panthers' front office clearly felt the defense had regressed under his leadership.
The numbers tell the story. Last season, Evero's unit ranked 16th in yards allowed and 15th in points allowed. This year, the performance has been uneven, culminating in a 43-13 blowout loss in Week 7 and a lackluster showing against Green Bay. The secondary, in particular, struggled, surrendering 288 passing yards and three touchdowns to Packers quarterback Jordan Love.
Injuries haven't helped. The Panthers have been without key cornerbacks Jaycee Horn and Will Lee III, leaving the defense short-handed. But the coaching staff felt the drop-off in performance was too significant to ignore.
Defensive line coach Todd Walsh will take over as the interim defensive play-caller, a role he'll step into immediately. The team will look to him to stabilize a unit that has been leaking big plays.
Despite the back-to-back losses, the Panthers remain tied for first place in the NFC South, a testament to the mediocrity of the division. The team has a chance to right the ship next Sunday when they host the Denver Broncos at home.
This shakeup is reminiscent of other mid-season coaching changes across the NFL, and it raises questions about which coaches are feeling the heat as the season progresses. While Evero's dismissal was swift, it underscores the pressure on teams to perform week in and week out.
The Panthers will hope that Walsh can spark a turnaround. With a winnable game against Denver on the horizon, the new-look coaching staff will have a chance to prove that this was the right call. Fans will be watching closely to see if the defense can bounce back and keep the team's playoff hopes alive.
